With these storms, after it is over, everybody gets to be right. 90% or more who we’re at risk will be unscathed. Some folks will get hurt. The media will descend on them.

#23 "Sorry for the double post"

Well you should be, apparently it was more damaging than the hurricane - Lol!!!! 😂

In all seriousness, this storm could have been a monster. I would prefer to see people taking the proper precaution and remaining safe. Wilma destroyed us in 2005 when we lived in Florida. I was dreading the hype for this storm. Even thousands of miles away I hurt for the people in Florida and truly hope this is all a waste of time.

Cheers and happy Friday!

We'll know in a day, who was right. I wonder if Popular Science will report the facts (accurately)?

Right now (5 AM cone), the storm is listed as 120 mph sustained winds (Cat 3) and 28.2 N 80 W (about 35 miles off shore).

“Aircraft have no political agenda.”

I would like to know the author’s opinion on guns.

> but I don’t think there has ever been a time in world history where mankind has been assigned the ability to control climate.

Sure there has. Ever heard of a “rain dance”?

The belief that man has power to influence the weather is a very very old and primitive one.

Now they have fancier technology to pursue it, but the essence of the practice is the same - faith-based, confirmation-bias wishful-emotional thinking.

The writer of that article neglects to say that Drudge had a link to a weather monitoring station in one of his tweets.

Thanks you both for those links. I've got the Windytv but forgot about it.

Fascinating to watch what's going on in the world.

Some very strange wind patterns sometimes. Look at the wind going toward the Panama-Columbia border from the west.

“Sure there has. Ever heard of a “rain dance”?”

Incidental weather is not climate.

From Wikipedia:

“Climate is the statistics of weather, usually over a 30-year interval.”

I was, of course, referring to civilized societies.

Using the 'Darksky.net' website, I can see that there are NO sustained winds above 52 while there are gusts ranging into the 80+ mph range. Translation, it is a storm that will cause extensive damage and power outages to the Florida midAtlantic coastline BUT the warnings about potential weeks of uninhabitability are invalid.

On the other hand, the areas north of the storm, especially the low costal marsh areas of Georgia and South Carolina, are having storm surge from the counter-clockwise wind push. It now looks like that will be the area with the greatest damage. It is the geography of that curve in the land mass that will concentrate that surge.

A major cause of uncertainty is that until landfall, all hurricane wind measurements are at altitude, with the lesser ground winds then based on models. In addition, hurricanes tend to weaken as they near land because they begin to lose the sustaining energy of warm water. Finally, official policy is to issue severe warnings in order to induce protective measures. In most instances then, hurricanes hit with less strength than forecast.

“We go with our data. That’s the end of it”

LIAR! Bald faced LIAR!

They get the data. So that’s what we see? ZERO human intervention. What a joke. Guess weathermen are no longer needed since it’s a pipeline of data to my screen.

lesser ground winds then based on models

This is true. When a tropical system is over water, surface winds are estimated using models, typically from dropsonde data. It appears that models routinely overestimate surface wind speeds. This suggests to me that the models need to be adjusted in order to more accurately predict wind speed.

In addition, hurricanes tend to weaken as they near land because they begin to lose the sustaining energy of warm water.

Not sure where this comes from. I live on the Gulf of Mexico, and water temperatures don't vary significantly near land or at sea.

Finally, official policy is to issue severe warnings in order to induce protective measures. In most instances then, hurricanes hit with less strength than forecast.

An official policy to issue accurate information about tropical systems is not inconsistent with a policy to encourage protective measures. Why say a storm is a Cat 4 when it is a middle of the road Cat 2? Public statements could emphasize that a Cat 2 hurricane is capable of causing widespread damage and power outages. I believe the desire to report exaggerated wind speeds is a form of virtue signalling. "Be safe! This storm has 140 m.p.h. winds! I care! The guy who looks at actual reported windspeeds of 97 m.p.h. doesn't care as much as I do!"

Couldn’t agree more soCalconservative, I was with the red cross days after Katrina in Slidell,La and in New Orleans during Rita. The real damage began when the eyewall entered around 15-20 miles out, IMHO people shouldn’t listein to people like drudge but professional weatherman when deciding whether to evacuate ones family or not. Iam just very grateful that SO FAR this storm hasn’t jogged westward and put people in harms way.

Unlike land, warm water provides an immense injection of moisture for clouds and energy for storm activity.

The Warmists are desperate for a real killer storm with multiple fatalities so they can push their agenda harder.

AMEN! (big thumbs up)

Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is nothing compared to what happens with any major change in sunspot activity (ever heard of the Maunder Minimum?) or if we have a very large volcanic eruption (e.g., Mount Tambora in 1815 or even the more recently Mount Pintatubo in 1991, both of which cause significant climate effects for nearly a decade).

Well...I take it back. Just when I bow to your brilliance you go and make a statement like this which proves you have no idea really what you are talking about if you don't understand dry air intrusion into a cyclone as it nears land. Katrina and Rita are PRIME examples of what happens to hurricanes, especially larger ones, as they near land and part of their inflow begins to come from land and not the ocean. There is also less TCHP in these areas due to a shallow shelf (of course you knew that).

Matter of fact, right now Matthew is taking on the CLASSIC appearance of a storm which is pulling in dry air from the land. Compare it with radar images of Katrina before landfall. The southern eyewall begins to erode and finally opens up. This is due to dry air....but again...you knew that.

Don't even bother trying. He's one of these posters whose smarter than everyone else in the room. Even the eggheads with hundreds of years experience between them at the NHC don't know as much as he does. I've offered to put him in touch with them so he could explain to them why their so stupid in their measurements and handling of data. Lexi Avila would LOVE to learn from this mental giant...and I am sure he could tell Stacy Stewart a thing or two...since he's so dense and needs to be schooled by this brilliant mind we have access to. And YES...I ended my sentence with a preposition!
