Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

"There's no comparison between a straight line wind that lasts a few seconds and sustained winds between 75 and 100 that last for hours. I've experienced both and there is NO comparison."

Absolutely. BTW, this particular t-storm had sustained winds that started at about 30 mph and built to 100 mph over a 30 minute period. But you are correct.

And regarding you claim of minimal forecast impact for South Carolina, may I present the current GFS run out to 54 hours - on the coast just south of Charleston, the worst configuration for surge.

While the GFS is the preferred model of the NHC, it's also demonstrably less accurate than the European...certainly, I want to be wrong here, but I'm going with the sources (people and models) I have trusted over time. They expect it to hit land somewhere near Jupiter. It actually would be a bit worse overall should that landfall be delayed a bit (say, Melbourne or Cocoa) as the winds would stay stronger over a wider area.

Meanwhile, even the NHC now indicates a landfall at 8am Friday at Titusville/Cape Canaveral.

First I want to say thanks to all the touching responses from fellow freeepers and particularly for the prayers. I said on the last thread that I would try and keep people updated. We are being required to shelter in place starting at 2:00 PM. We will be locked down. We have evacuated several hospitals to our large hospital and will try to ride this out -- if the center part of the strike cone is accurate, the eye will pass over us tomorrow at roughly 8:00 AM. I must say I am somewhat curious to see this.

As I was saying yesterday the feel here on the eastern seaboard is very different. While the weather is squally and squirley like other tropical systems I have gone through, there is no question that this is a monster. Most people generally take these weather advisories with a grain of salt as there have been several false alarms over the years. But as this forecast track has firmed up -- there is certainly a very grim seriousness in this part of the state. What is interesting is most people are saying stay safe, and we will get through this together. There definitely is the sense that we are in this together and we will get through this -- amazingly most people say that the federal government will be worthless to us and we have to do this on our own.

I anticipate that we should have power throughout being in a major hospital, so hopefully will be able to give you all a ringside seat as to this most interesting storm. Ormond Beach has the target right on it -- so al least I can give you all a unique perspective.

My point is it’s not going to hit at 140mph winds.

If pressure keeps dropping could be closer to 150mph. Once it is in the Gulfstream, hurricanes usually strengthen. We have to see then what quadrant of the storm has the strongest winds. A Cat 4-5 storm of average size will have winds damaging far from the eyewall, not 150mph high but high and damaging.

Ocala is way inland -- which should be pretty sage. Ocala is northwest of Orlando -- beautiful country.

It was just announced that all major grocery stores are closing east of I-95 in just a few minutes, so time is running out for all...preparations are coming to an end, and it is time to hunker down and hope for the best.

To get an idea about what a sustained hurricane force wind is like, be a passenger in a car going 75 miles in hour and then stick your head out the window! Even my dog would put her head back in once I got over 35mph.

Okay, you’ve marked your territory and everybody is aware. You can crow about it if you’ve proven right and the rest of us will breathe a sigh of relief at being wrong... which would be a good thing for Florida. Meantime, we’ll go with what the forecasters are telling us and that’s for something at least 140mph at landfall... and it’s now at 140 in the Bahamas on the 11am advisory.

Well you can always count on the media to do that with just about anyone of their choosing. We no longer have journalists, we have talk show hosts gathering around a counter chit chatting about their own opinions....

Dirt don’t feed the troll. He is forecasting out of his anal orifice, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. The Mod has been notified and his disruptive asshattery has been reported.

My point is it’s not going to hit at 140mph winds.

It's already at 140 mph sustained and has yet to cross the Gulf Stream, which gave both Hugo and Andrew a significant boost in strength.

The high winds and rain bands of a hurricane last for days.
I was raised in tornado country, got to experience Loma Prieta up close and personal, and now live in the paths of hurricanes. I’m actually sort of inured to natural gang-banging, so if it scares somebody, they need to get out more.

Possibility of looting has not been the main reason for people staying in their homes. Many are simply very old, and don’t want to be bothered with the hassle of breaking their daily routine. Denial of the danger is another reason for staying.
