'Disturbing' photos highlight drug, homelessness issues in San Francisco's SoMa
SFGate ^ | October 4, 2016 | Dianne de Guzman

On a Sunday when most folks in San Francisco were posting images of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to social media, Adam Mesnick instead posted a photo from his SoMa neighborhood.

In it, a man is seen apparently helping another man shoot heroin in broad daylight, right near the corner of Russ and Howard streets.

Mesnick is the owner of local sandwich shop Deli Board and its smaller counterpart, Rye Project. He runs the Twitter account for Deli Board and posts photos of the drug problem outside of his business, alongside images of his sandwiches.

It's not what you'd expect from a deli, but for Mesnick the account has become a venting outlet. Not only has he been a business owner and resident of the area for the past seven years, he has also taken on the role of being a photojournalist of sorts. He keeps a depressing record of what he feels is the downturn of his neighborhood.

"It's hard to thrive and cook and do something that you're completely passionate about and love, when you're sort of watching a little bit of an urban decay," Mesnick said Sunday.

While some would say the problems have always been around in SoMa, Mesnick argues that the area has gotten worse. The Cleveland transplant said that he hasn't always felt unsafe in the neighborhood, but recent drug-laced and violent incidents — including people with bats and weapons at times — has him worried about SoMa.

I very much wonder how long the millenial programmers earning $150,000/yr and paying average $3500/mo for a one bedroom apartment are going to continue to think this is a fun, gritty, edgy way to live and

actually vote in some supervisors/a mayor who will not allow drug abuse, dealing, or holding in public.

a good number of people like to live in chaos...it enlivens them...reinforces their superiority complexes...

I could never and would never visit a restaurant if I had to have bums, feces, urine etc to walk thru...

In the summer of 67 I was part of that scene for a little while except for the drugs but I did not sleep on the sidewalk. I slept on Elvin Mountain in the park. Then I went on down the coast and got a job. It’s even fun for a little time but gets old after a bit.

I see you’ve read some SF-area real estate ads, and have a handle on pricing.

Nope. Not with 94+ million Americans not in the work force.

These people don’t stand a chance these days. Offshoring, illegal invasion, etc. It’s a terrible thing to see. I’m experiencing it to a significant degree.

It’s just a matter of time until it catches up with folks who think they’re immune.

Slamming Soma in public in the “SoMa” neighborhood? The irony!

For those who don’t know, “SoMa” is what locals call the neighborhood area “south of Market”

“actually vote in some supervisors/a mayor who will not allow drug abuse, dealing, or holding in public.”

The ACLU sued Ft. Collins, Co. and won in a case about pan-handlers. The police can no longer run them off. They’re everywhere now in Northern Colorado.

I didn’t know, and thanks for the information. I do get tired of people using abbreviations and acronyms without explaining what they mean, at least at first use.

Years ago I went out on a first date with a chick. It was chaperoned. It was in SoMa.

I took her (them, actually) to a really neat place that made crepes. They would do a flamb-ay and light them on fire. Not all the alcohol burned off, and she sorta accused me of trying to get her drunk.

I married the chick, and we still call that place “date rape crepe”. It’s gone now; I think it was called Ti Couz.

Anyway, to the point: at 2am when we left I saw my first and only traffic jam composed solely of bums and their grocery carts. They actually had bum gridlock!

Also, SoMa is where I saw my first bum openly pooping on the sidewalk.
