Ignoring Anti-Refugee Rhetoric, Texans Rush to Help in Resettlement
The Texas Tribune ^ | September 30, 20169-3-2016 | by Jim Malewitz

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the state's withdrawal from the national refugee resettlement program.

Texas' top elected officials have not exactly welcomed refugees over the past year.

Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the federal government — thus far unsuccessfully — to keep people fleeing war-ravaged Syria from settling here. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller compared refugees to venomous rattlesnakes.

And Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott followed through on his threat to end cooperation with the nation’s refugee resettlement program because federal officials refused to “unconditionally approve” a Texas plan requiring extra vetting of applicants. Such a move will not keep refugees from coming here, but it eliminates the state government's role.

But everyday Texans seem to be more willing to help refugees from Syria and elsewhere start new lives in the Lone Star State. Nonprofits that resettle refugees say volunteer turnout has increased — in some cases dramatically — since Texas Republicans first suggested they threatened security.

“It’s one of those rare issues where people’s hearts are really united in supporting refugees,” said Chris Kelley, a spokesman for Refugee Services of Texas, the state’s largest resettlement nonprofit with offices in five different cities. “And I think they see through the rhetoric.”

Kelley said his agency had about 100 names on its Austin volunteer list on Nov. 1 of last year, shortly before state leaders started trying to keep out Syrian refugees. That number has since ballooned to more than 1,400.

The group’s Austin chapter now has 30 “welcome teams,” volunteers who pick up newly arrived refugees from the airport, set up their apartments, help them navigate the town and assist in other ways. That is up from 14 teams in late 2015.

I wonder how Texans feel about admitting between 85,000-110,000 “refugees” per year nationally? Do they think that number is right, or should it be lowered or increased?

What about Hillary’s support for increasing Syrian admissions by 500%? Do Texans support or oppose that ?

The volunteers need to let them move in with them.

There are always useful idiots willing to commit suicide.

Don’t forget, millions are changing hands to resettle the savages here.

“volunteers who pick up newly arrived refugees from the airport, set up their apartments, help them navigate the town and assist in other ways”

Assist in other ways——welfare, food stamps,section-8,public housing.Medicaid and all the good stuff.

Refugees go to the head of the line for Senior Housing———even kicking aside veterans,

The Leftists and their wet dreams to turn Texas blue…at Texas taxpayers’ expense, of course. We have these diseased, illiterate children in public schools in every medium to large city in the state. Only the rural areas have managed to escape this plague because they are not able to provide the amenities required by the government for these new squatters, which the American rural children do not have.

Cowards!!!

Why are they even arguing this?

Flatly tell the Feds that the State of Texas will not accept any refugees.

If the Feds send them have the state police take them in to custody and put them in a bus and take them to Washington DC. Drop them off in front of the White House.

There is no constitutional power that is granted the US Government to do this.

“ALLEGED” children in many cases, on top of it.

There is zero (or maybe Zero) effective control of the situation.

Austin does not represent Texas.

A Texan is patient and kind to all God's creatures - but we know when we're being invaded as well.
