The Center for American Progress reveals that students pay more than $1.3 billion in tuition and fees each year for remedial courses which qualify them for academic credits, but do not count towards graduation. California had the highest rate of out-of-pocket remedial spending with more than $205 million, while Alaskan students spent just $1.1 million, statistics generally attributed to student enrollment in these states. According to the survey, the majority of college students enrolled in remedial courses are ethnic minorities, including 56% of African American students and 45% of Hispanic students, compared to just 35% of white students.

Just draft them into the military and ORDER them to get their GED. Officers can do the teaching at any base in the world.

I don’t understand the problem. If the lazy dumbasses couldn’t learn to read and write and do basic math after 12 years of free school, they should pay more or learn on their own time.

These are all high school graduates that can not qualify to take college level courses. The colleges accept them then put them in remedial classes to try to bring them up to a minimum ability. These remedial classes do not count toward graduation, and carry no course credits that will transfer to other colleges.

Back in the day, these students would never have been accepted by a college, they would have to go to a college prep school first, then pass entrance exams to go to college. But now, politicians are enamored with the “everyone should go to college” idea.

The author of this study advocates COMMIE CORE as “raising the academic standards” so that students won’t have to take remedial courses. Stop the presses right there. Commie Core is garbage, with the students teaching themselves in small groups.

I have always thought that remediation for college students is the ultimate oxymoron.

I remember several years ago, that CUNY was giving remedial reading classes to people, to prepare them to take the New York State Police exam. The State couldn’t get minorities into the department fast enough because they couldn’t pass the test. Pretty pathetic.

Why would I care how much it costs Hillary voters to improve their reading skills up to the level of my 5 year old?

“I don’t understand the problem”

My solution- chargeback the cost to original high school- they should not be graduating students that cannot pass the tests.
This would stop when local schools were running out of money do to graduating unqualified students

“the majority of college students enrolled in remedial courses are ethnic minorities...”

Want to bet the vast majority of the minorities came out of schools from liberal-controlled cities in Democratic states?

Just print them college diplomas as you did with high school diplomas. Problem solved.

Hubby was a Air Electronics Tech SCPO, taught computer/electronics both in the Navy and then 20 yrs at S.W. State Tech Jr College. All his Memphis students were given their A/B grades, when they hit his class they had to do remedial Math first, as they didn’t have the basics required for it. Many dropped out. And he is a good patient teacher. Still teaches Ham Radio math for Extra Class @ 77.

Just handing out unearned grades does not improve education!
