As the killer stood before him, Judge Kenneth Walker couldn't stay silent.
"If I could I would take all the guns in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean," the judge told the defendant. "Nobody would have a gun. Not police, not security, not anybody. We should eliminate all of them. We could save 33,000 people a year if we didn't have guns in this country."
Marcell Lee Daniel Jr. had unleashed 30 bullets during an afternoon drive-by shooting of an innocent man on a North Portland sidewalk. The man, Andrew Coggins Jr., 24, died.
The judge kept going.
"Australia after a major shooting rounded up all the guns, and they haven't had near the death that we do here in this country," he said.
"I just saw last night a statistic that 11,000 people in America are murdered each year and another 20,000 commit suicide with guns," Walker said, referring to figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"They are a scourge of this country and no one should have one as far as I'm concerned," he said. "There's no defense to guns. There's just absolutely no reason to have them. But it is a right of people in this country to own and possess them, and I will not say anything to affect that right."
Walker, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge for nearly 10 years and a criminal defense attorney before that for 25 years, sentenced Daniel to 17 1/2 years in prison.

Wow! I never realized the world was beautiful utopia with no crime, violence, murder or war before the firearm was invented in the 12th century!
Dumbassed judges who think Americans’ 2nd Amendment rights are expendable should be dumped into the ocean.. from 30,000 feet up... without a parachute.
How about dropping every vehicle into the ocean? Save another 40,000 deaths a year... what a buffoon!
The judge only sentenced the guy to 17.5 years. Not much of a sentence for murder.
We’d also still have pressure cookers & pipes.
Stupid is as stupid
We have the right to own guns in order to protect us from the likes of this judge.
This is well illustrated in the movie “Judgement at Nuremburg” where the judges, even though they sit in clean rooms and wear pressed black robes, can kill an innocent man with the stroke of a pen.
Impeachment for constitution trashing jurists and politicians
Better get rid of those lethal rocks also!
Better to round up hardened criminals, put THEM on barges and dump THEM in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Hang or in some for execute the hardened criminals. THAT will severely reduce the crime.
That right there should be the last phrase this “judge” ever utters from the bench. He has proven himself to be a moron without the sense God gave a goose. Not that I am proposing it but a MORE LOGICAL PHRASE would be, “take ever black male 18 to 34 and put them on a barge...”. That would end half the murder in the US. No one thinks this is acceptable. This guy needs to go.
Maybe if we took all the criminals of the ilk the murderer represented and dumped them all in the ocean we would also save a bunch of lives too, eh your honor?
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some ol' fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me
People don’t need a gun to commit murder.
The instrument of death that is most common it the hammer.
A truth even William Shakespeare knew hundreds of years ago when he penned, “The first thing we do, lets kill all the lawyers”.
“The problem is those administering the system.”
Our (biggest) problem is lawyers. They make everything cost more. They coach CEOs, school boards and associations. They become judges that let murderers off lightly. They become politicians. They are mostly unhappy, depressed, unbalanced people. There are too many of them. Most of THEM need to be put on a barge and dumped in the Arctic ocean.
Well said!
This same idiot judge claimed in 2015 that there were only at most only 15 violent moslems in the entire world.
Congress should be impeaching folks by the busload, but they continue in their unwillingness to protect the Constitution by getting rid of traitors.
