Sweden to reintroduce military service
France 24 ^

Around 4,000 young Swedes, 18-year-olds of both sexes, are expected to be called up each year.

The move was "an intelligent proposal given that we have seen for a number of years now that volunteers are not sufficient to supply either the quality or quantity of soldiers" needed, Johan Osterberg, a researcher from the School for Advanced Defence Studies, told news agency TT.

Sweden is not a NATO member but has signed the body's Partnership for Peace programme launched in 1994 to develop military cooperation between NATO and non-member countries.

“Sweden is like a gigantic Marin County.”

That’s a keeper. Good one.

We have plenty of unwed mothers hanging around as well. Lots of CAT 3&4 folks who long ago would have been screened out. Lots of folks who wouldn’t be there except by virtue of reduced height, weight & physical fitness standards.

Yep, our volunteer military looks a lot like our society as a whole. Maybe it's not that impressive to you but it's who we are and what we've got. I'm thrilled that we still have a culture that considers our country worth defending. Sweden obviously no longer does.

Just as a side note, how many unwed mothers do you think have died in service to our nation?

I’ll bet that government benefits in Sweden are more generous than those the military give out. We can’t let it happen here.

I would hope so. Don’t give weapons and training to them.

“What? Why we haven’t convinced a single generation of the Romney or Sununu families to serve. This is a half correct move on the part of Sweden. Why they’d be drafting women is beyond me.”

Or Trump, Cruz, Kasich, Ryan, Walker, Rubio, Obama, Clinton, Kaine, Gingrich, Reid, Santorum, Huckabee, etc. McConnell and Boehner were discharged after a short time of service.

Yes, you’re preaching to the choir here. The last two limpdicks you mentioned are perfect examples. The GOP as a whole really doesn’t set the example, if you believes that our leaders should show up for wars. Is service in the reserve components so taxing that Preibus, Walker or Ryan couldn’t have managed it.

No actually it doesn’t look like our society as a whole, it’s much more discriminating and in my opinion should be more so; elite schools and high income families are not represented very well. As regards unwed mothers, the more pertinent question is how many units deploy short of critical MOS personnel because of pregnancy.

Boehner enlisted in the United States Navy but was honorably discharged after eight weeks because of a bad back.

Never stopped him from playing thousands of rounds of golf. I get it, all that nicotine and booze was for self-medication.

Yes, service members are some of the best of our society - it was you, not I, that was talking about the poor quality of the members of our armed forces. And you can worry about units not being fit to deploy because of inferior personnel but my question concerning how many unwed mothers had given their lives in service to our country was meant for you to realize that not only the elite step up and serve.

In the grand scheme of things quite few both in absolute numbers or as a percentage of overall casualties. One thing is for sure, once upon a time the military was much more selective and had a qualitatively better force than they do now.

By the way, what’s your experience been in terms of deploying with a unit?
