New law allows Californians to rescue pets from hot cars

SACRAMENTO — Californians who see an animal trapped in a hot car can now break a window to set them free without fear of prosecution under a bill signed over the weekend by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Rescuers can break into the car as long as there is no other way to free the animal, for instance if the animal appears to be in peril, the car is locked and law enforcement is not arriving quickly enough.

The rescuer must stay at the scene until law enforcement respond to the situation.

The bill was introduced after a series of incidents in which dogs died after being left in closed cars on hot days.

And what about the sunroof being wide open, parked in the shade, Mr. PETA?

yes ten minutes is not four hours and the guy that left his dogs in the car that long should be horse whipped I am just saying a law is unnecessary because it is the type of law that will have some one using it as an excuse to break a window.

I have an unusual point of view.

My dogs do not go with me in the car, unless it’s a necessity, such as vet visits or their birthday.

Beyond temperature issues, since the mid-90s, we’ve had problems with scumbags stealing dogs [even majorly badass ones like my Dobes] out of cars.

Some of them are sold to labs, others wind up in puppy mills and the rest are used as dog fight bait.

The lucky few who fail to meet the needs of the above, wind up being dumped out, far from home.

I’m a member of several groups who get ‘amber alerts’ for lost pets and some who disappeared *here*, have been found hundreds of miles away.

[—> insert plug for microchippng pets, here]

There is NO way I will even *slightly* risk any of those possibilities.

When the dogs *do* go out, they either go into pet-friendly stores with me or one of us stays in the car, with them.

I will not be one of those tragic, grieving souls, endlessly posting fliers and ads, wondering what’s become of their beloved pets.
