The U.S. Army has dropped Smith & Wesson from its Modular Handgun System competition, according to a Sept. 23 report Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation made to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Smith & Wesson, which was partnered with General Dynamics, was one of five gun makers competing to replace the Army’s M9 9mm pistol.

“We and our partner in the pursuit of the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System, or MHS, solicitation to replace the M9 standard Army sidearm have been notified by the Department of the Army that our proposal was not selected to advance to the next phase of the competition,” according to the SEC report.

TheFirearmBlog.com was the first to report the news about Smith & Wesson.

Looks like the army is only considering striker fired guns.

I bet they won't take the Glock, because of its perceived need for extra training.

Same reason we Marines had to deal with the 3 shot burst on the M16A2. Army didn't want to teach trigger control.

Aww shiite, it looks like S&W just didn’t contribute enough to the Clinton Foundation to compete with those foreign gun manufacturers.

If they’re not considering a model 1911 Colt .45, Glock 17 is the only way to go...

Incorrect mode of thinking; Glock would be why they’d use it because this decision was from 0bama and his marxist cronies. No safety means danger, loss of life in accidents and loss of American pride. A perfect marxist match.

Remember who we are dealing with.

Time to look at trading activity and see who profited ahead of the announcement. Buying opportunity!

I absolutely agree. Which is why they probably won’t choose it.

The M16A2 was created specifically for the USMC. The army did not switch and kept their M16A1's (at least, this was the case back in my era. I spent time in both the Army and Marine Corps from '86 to '92)

The big difference between them was that the A2 has a dial to adjust the range on the rear sight. The Army goes with the philosophy of using fixed sights and Kentucky windage for range adjustment.

I don't know who came up with the 3-shot burst idea, but I do know it wasn't done for the Army.

BTW, AFAIK "trigger control" in the USMC refers to applying slow even pressure to the trigger in a manner such that you are surprised when the rifle fires. This is done to prevent reflexive flinching. If one practices good trigger control on an automatic weapon, there is no telling how many rounds will go down range before you let off the trigger. I suspect that this is the reason the M16A2 offered only semi-automatic and 3-round burst modes.

Well, I’m an old school 1911 guy. Carried one for three years in the army (one yr in nam) as an MP. I have two versions, both left handed Randall’s. So that they will feed the more exotic ammo have had their ramps polished, and their ejection ports opened some. Although they have collector value I’ve made them both shooters. I also have the Beretta M9/92F 9mm. This is my truck gun. Although it doesn’t have first round knock down capability of the 1911, my wife likes this gun. So, it just stays in my truck to be there for whoever is driving it. Although special op’s carry highly modified 1911’s I don’t think it will ever return as a std carry weapon. Two reasons; it’s a single/single action and thereby requires a considerable amount of training so to manipulate it reflexively. Also, it only hold 7+1 rounds. I also like the M9 as it’s extremely reliable and holds 15 rounds. 9mm round is a little light in the britches just need to learn to double tap. Anyway, if the military intends to stay with the 9mm round I see no reason to change. Whew! Wrote way more than I intended, sorry :)

Okay, we were in about the same time. That's just what I was told in '89.

Thanks. Anyway, they should just take the Glock and be done with it.

I carry a Para-ordanance P-12 compact 1911 variant in .45cal.....

Have for almost 20 years....

Extra rounds, lightweight amd extremely reliable plus accurate.....

Too short a barrel for Military carry but there are pleanty of good high capacity 1911 variants.....

The larger issue is why are they focused on 9mm and not other rounds?

< I also have the Beretta M9/92F 9mm. This is my truck gun.

One of my favorite handguns. The weight and shape just feel right, it's reliable, and I get higher scores on the range with them for some reason.

My vote with would be to keep the Beretta. Wars are not won or lost by the issue sidearm and the Beretta works reasonably well. If I were forced to change I’d not go with a Glock. The ergos are flat out awful for a lot of people.

If staying with 9mm and striker fired I’d choose either the HK VP9 or Sig P320.

If the requirement was to go back to 45 I’d choose the S&W M&P45.

I would not choose any flavor of Glock or 1911.

"The larger issue is why are they focused on 9mm and not other rounds?"

See the exhaustive FBI handgun study that was released a couple of years ago. It was the conclusions of this study that convinced the FBI to go back to the 9mm. There is an excellent two part summary of the study on youtube that you should be able to find with a search on the youtube search engine. (that's how I found it). It is very enlightening. The basic crux is that the concept of greater "stopping power" of a .40 cal or a .45 cal is a myth. The key for a handgun (which is an intrinsically defensive weapon) is being able to fire accurate, fast follow up shots and all of the FBI shooters from the best to the merely adequate were able to place quicker, more accurate follow up shots with the 9mm.

There goes the M&P, which is striker fired for the poster who thought it was hammer. My bet is that it is between the Sig 320, HK VP and Glock 17.

Except the FBI can carry highly expandable JHP’s.....

Military only carries FMJs....

Numbers are way different then....
