One astonishing picture of Hillary Clinton shows who and what we've become

Dear famous person,

If we want to be seen with you, we'll turn our backs on you.

Please don't be offended.

It's just that your fame isn't enough for us anymore.

We need to attach ourselves to your fame, so that we can post the resulting picture to Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat.

That way, we achieve our own sort of mini-fame. Which could be the maximal fame we ever attain.

Please forgive me for this missive to the stars.

There's a reason: this astounding picture posted on Sunday to Twitter by Hillary For America design lead Victor Ng. He credited the shot to the photographer currently working on the Clinton campaign, Barbara Kinney.

As Hillary Clinton stands on a podium and waves, not one of the throng in front of her seems to be facing her.

Instead, everyone has turned their backs and raised their phones in order to get a little of themselves -- perhaps just their hair or their upper forehead -- into the shot.

Ng offered this caption: "2016, ya'll."

One can surely forgive him for misplacing his apostrophe, as he gazed upon this human catastrophe.

Increasingly we prefer to be seen with each other, instead of looking at each other.

We live not to be there, but to be seen to be there.

So, dear famous person, please understand that it's all a show now. All of it.

This might be especially worth remembering should you be taking part in some sort of debate in the near future.

Obviously, this was set up as an opportunity for them all to get a selfie with her. Author of article makes it seem like it was spontaneous. It would be hilarious if it was, though.

The "selfie" thing is permeating our society - but we're not alone. Pretty much everyone with a smartphone is doing this. I've seen the telescoping "selfie sticks" referred to here as "The Wand of Narcissus" and I think that pretty much nails it.

I just experienced this Hillary for America tonight. This kept popping up on the bottom of YouTube videos:
Registr to vote in Ohio - Official Clinton Campaign. Officially register to vote in Ohio and help elect Hillary this fall. Clicking on the link took me to a site called iwillvote.com.

Disclaimer:
Paid for by Hillary for America, a grassroots campaign of over two million donors committed to electing Hillary Clinton (And keeping Donald Trump out of the White House.)

It seemed somewhat reminiscent of the situation where people were doing a search on where to vote and got directed to Hillary’s website instead of an official register to vote site. It was suggested this was one of the ways they would be cheating - two lists of registered voters.

I just thought it was a little creepy.

At first I didn’t get it. I thought maybe Trump was passing through the place and they all started waving at him ... including Hillary. :-)

All this constant photography of one self’s picture in the mirror, smooching at her own reflection in he iPhone, always reminds me of the mythical curse of Narcissus, who saw his own reflection in a pool of water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his own reflection, Narcissus lost his will to live and stared at his reflection until he died.

I’m so disgusted with our society and our wasted collective potential.

Probably not. The last selfie I took was with Silk and Diamond in Cleveland. I am a selective selfie taker because I never like the way I look in close up phone pictures. It’s as self serving as that.

That photo is icing-on-the-cake proof that the 28th Amendment should overturn the 19th Amendment.

I’ve taken exactly one...of the top of my head to show my mom the color that cost me double what I was quoted before hand. I had just called her for encouragement before I told my husband how much I spent (tip money from my job). My face wasn’t in it at all.
