WHILE much of the world is throwing up new borders to clamp down on unwanted migrants, one organisation is pushing for free movement between Australia and a select group of countries.

The Commonwealth Freedom of Movement Organisation wants to see unrestricted movement for citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK between nations.

Similar levels of economic growth, development, healthcare and quality of life added to the case that freedom of movement wouldn’t be a “brain drain” for any particular nation, he said.

That's the key. Genuine cultural similarity and no real economic incentive for people to flee from one country to another en masse. That makes it very different from the European experiment.

The UK is already overrun from both the former colonies and from EU open borders.

Would have worked before the sellout of UK, etc to the Islamonazi invasion. Now it would further enable the enemy’s penetration and terrorist mass- murder attacks in Australia, New Zealand, U.K., Canada (and this USA too!!!) -——send the Moslems home and then take up this free- travel idea again

Ummm, NO!

Although I would love free movement between your country and mine, this would open us both to muslim invaders by way of the UK.

I think to some degree, they already have movement between “Commonwealth of Nations” members, which also include Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Kenya, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations#Objectives_and_activities

I say this because around 1980 a company I then worked for sought to bring an Indian national to the US, because he was a valued employee.

It was stated at the time he could get to Britain or Canada for sure, if not the US.

So we went ahead, he succeeded to get a US Green Card and eventual citizenship.

what they need is a history lesson...

we had “free movement” when I was a teenager...

between NZ and Aussie you could go back and forth and work in both countries..

As a New Zealander, I had no trouble getting into Canada and England...didn’t need a visa for either...

“new borders”? I haven’t heard about those. Must be some new countries somewhere.

A very interesting idea.I know that travel between Australia and New Zealand is quite easy. Also, travel between the US and Canada is pretty easy as well...both countries make it easier for citizens of the other to enter than for citizens of any other country.I regularly travel to Canada (by car) and my entry involves a couple of questions and a quick peek at my ID card. And I believe that's typical at the US/Canada border.

The four countries are natural allies and friends.IMO such a plan could work and could be mutually beneficial for all countries.

Ooops...I read “UK” as “US”.Hmmm....given the substantial number of “South Asians” in Britain the other three just might be reluctant here.

If you investigate this idea I’ll bet you a steak dinner that you’ll find the Muslim Brotherhood is behind it.

Certainly the possibility of third party entry needs to be looked at - but the idea of free movement that only involves citizens of the nations (not residents - citizens) involved may be reasonably practical.

I don’t know if I think this is a good idea yet. I do think it’s worth looking at.

Not anymore - yes, we had that until about 1983, but the European Union made Britain stop giving such free movement to other members of the Commonwealth. That’s one of the reasons why some people were anti-EU (although not one of the most important reasons) because it forced the UK to abandon some traditional friends. I was travelling quite regularly between Australia and the UK at the time, and I remember the first time I had to use the ‘Aliens’ gate at Heathrow.

(I have joint UK/Australian citizenship now but at that time I only had Australian citizenship - there had been no point up until then in asserting my right to British citizenship by descent - now there was).

I would suspect that if it ever happens, and the US wanted membership that would be considered quite favourably - but this is being suggested by a Commonwealth group and it isn’t their role to make suggestions as to what the US might or might not want to do, if the way they can feel quite happy to do so for Commonwealth members.

The proportion of Muslims in the UK is only about 4.5% of the population and most of those aren’t citizens. The free movement deal would most likely only apply to citizens not mere residents.

4.5% isn’t really that much higher than Canada or Australia already have.

The bigger risk is that some people might not want to limit this to the four country’s mentioned - they might want it extended to the entire Commonwealth - which includes Pakistan and India with very large Muslim populations. I would not want to see that happen, but it might be legally and politically difficult to create such a deal that included Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK and not be more broad (limiting it to the sixteen Commonwealth Realms might be more possible - which would exclude India and Pakistan... but then you do have an economic imbalance as some of the Realms are significantly poorer than the big four).

Not really - Canada and Australia have nearly as many already. The idea that the UK really has a lot of Muslims gets a bit exaggerated at times - some parts of the UK do, including some parts of London, but they really are quite a small minority overall.

But critically any free movement deal would likely only apply to citizens not just residents - and that makes a big difference. While some of these people do become citizens, a great many don't. That's part of the problem actually, in my view - that they don't feel connected enough to where they live now to make that commitment.

I see, thanks for the info. Yes, including the countries the Moslems have already taken over....would make what I think is a dangerous proposal...into a disasterous one.

ps: Incidentally, UK is having Moslem population increase there very, very rapidly.... it ain’t gonna be no 4.5% for long!
See, for instance:
