Nike's self-lacing sneakers finally go on sale November 28th

Nike has finally announced when it will begin selling its self-lacing sneakers inspired by the shoes worn by Michael J. Fox in Back to The Future II. According to a tweet from the company's Heidi Burgett, the HyperAdapt 1.0 will be available for "experience & purchase" starting on the 28th of November, but only in select Nike locations in the US. Pricing is still unknown, but expect a "high price tag," according to a Wired feature on the shoe's development.

You can check out the full story from Wired for a more detailed look at how the sneakers were made, but here are the key points. Each shoe has an internal cable system made from fishing line and a pressure sensor in the sole. When you put your foot in, the cables tighten based on "an algorithmic pressure equation," and this fit can be adjusted throughout the day with a pair of buttons near the tongue.

LEDs in the heel light up when the shoes are tightening and when it's on low battery, and all the internal electronics mean that yes, you do have to charge these shoes. It takes three hours for a full charge and each charge last about two weeks, with Nike providing a magnetic clip-on charger similar to that used by Apple for the Apple Watch. It's also worth noting that the thick nylon laces you see on the top of the sneaker are just "visual aids" — they tighten, but they're not what's keeping the shoe hugged to your foot. You can watch the video below from Wired for a closer look:

Coolness changes... usually as soon as dorks start catching on to “the cool thing”. Next year that look will be for dorks.

What’s the latest cool way to “shake” hands? I’m still about twenty years behind to the “high fives”.

Do they even still use hands?

That’s the beauty of “electronic shoes”. You can come up with new apps and add ons each year and keep it cool, like the iPhone. Think how much fun you could have with a little bult-in web cam looking up at the tip of those shoes!

“...people in nursing homes who can’t bend over...”

Let’s not forget the ghettopotami, the morbidly obese ones who can’t bend over to tie their shoes. They’ll need taxpayer subsidies. It’s a human right.

"Wasn’t Hogarth the artist who depicted lower and middle class English in different states of dissolution?"

They fancied fancy shoes, too.

It’s just a fun BTTF thing, I think it’s a cute idea. It’s not lazy, it’s a tip of the hat to a very fun movie.

What they REALLY need to make is pants that pull themselves up.

Look up “Lock Laces”. These shoe laces are fantastic and inexpensive. Strong too.

Don’t have to fight tying double bows anymore - just pull on the ends and they lock automatically. To unlock just push on the tabs.

This is what I meant:

The title says these are “self-lacing.” They aren't. They are “self-tightening” or “self-securing.” “Self-lacing” means the shoe would put the lace (string) through the shoe and then tie the shoe up, perhaps into a bow.

The title is completely misleading.
