'I can't find a job because I don't speak Spanish'

'I can't find a job because I don't speak Spanish': Working class Alabama woman says changing demographics brought on by illegal immigration has left her struggling to find employment

Sandra Langlois, 42, is a resident of Albertville, Alabama, where the demographic has changed significantly due to immigration

She says she is still unemployed because she has told prospective bosses she doesn't speak Spanish

30 per cent of the population of the town of Albertville is Hispanic

A CNN poll shows that working class whites feel that immigrants have negatively impacted their job prospects Survey finds that working class whites in the South are more likely to support deporting illegal immigrants

Though Albertville is known as the home of the Mueller Company, the fire hydrant-manufacturing giant, it is also the place where poultry processing plants have come in and hired a labor force made up predominantly of immigrants.

Locals like Langlois say the large immigrant population has made it harder for those here legally to find work.

'It's just not fair,' she says. 'It's like they're getting special treatment.'

Others, however, say that the immigrants have bolstered the economy because they are willing to do jobs that native whites will not do.

'There's plenty of jobs,' says an Albertville resident, Ronnie Wise. 'You've just got to want to do it.'

Wise, who is himself unemployed, told CNN that the local economy benefits from a large immigrant population.

'A lot of people don't want to [work in certain jobs], and they (immigrants) will. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have any chicken plants here.'

CNN cited a poll which said that 27 per cent of working class whites believe that their families have been negatively impacted by illegal immigrants taking jobs in their communities.

I go to a super market in the United States whose prices and item names on shelves are in Spanish and English (ditto for their mailed ad sheets)and who sometimes make in-store PA announcements in Spanish. Outside the store is a big sign that reads; Carneceria (Meat Market) but without the English equivalent. We are becoming bi-lingual, perhaps soon to be poly-lingual if the progressives hold sway. And English is still not the official language of the the United States.

Nowadays, some people are unemployable because they can't speak English.

My son ran into the same problem in the Mira Mesa area of San Diego as a high school student in 2001. He resolved the problem by learning Spanish and had his pick of jobs. The Mexican fast food work turned into real estate agent, then real estate broker work. He's skilled enough to represent a Spanish speaking client in a court proceeding where English is the spoken language in court. Not bad for a US Marine with a 4.33 GPA :-)

My grandparents emigrated to the US from Sweden and somehow managed to learn enough English to get jobs shortly after their arrival - my grandfather worked for Pullman and then International Harvester, and my grandmother worked as a nanny and a maid. My grandparents came here with only grade school educations - one came from a poor farming family, the other from a poor family of fishermen.

I truly resent the many seconds of my life I've had to spend listening to "press 2 for Spanish" when I call my bank or pretty much any company these days.

Fifteen years ago, when I still wanted to work, you had to be bilingual to even get an interview with 90% of the employers around here. It’s BULL!

END WELFARE, WIC, EBT, etc., and Americans will HAVE to do “those jobs.” Like they used to do.

I have knowledge of Spanish by seeing people around me using it.

But we are becoming like Canada with official bilingualism and the big business and big government leaders are full committed to implementing it.

In our Corporatist Uniparty system of R’s and D’s they will do nothing other than some R’s symbolically oppose it to keep grassroots voters happy and pretend they care to get our votes.

I went to 1st and 2nd grade in Vallejo in the 60’s and they were teaching us Spanish then.

“many seconds of my life I’ve had to spend listening to “press 2 for Spanish””

Well, the Dems need to keep a subpopulation poor and virtually broke to get votes. They wised up and learned that when immigrants learn English, their earning power improves and they see through the Dem masquerade. The end result is that they lose power.

So, instead of letting Spanish speaking immigrants (and illegals for that matter) learn English, they keep them out of the population at large by catering to their linguistic needs and preventing them from assimilating. They’ll continue to vote Dem and live in poverty. Dems don’t really care since they hate people ... they only lust for power.

If Trump gets in and delivers on his illegal immigration control policy, the Democratic Party is DOA and they know it. The results will be tangible not even a year after they are implemented.

This has been going on for a long time.

Why do we have to change?

It’s OUR country.

Assimilate or leave.

Just look at the classified ads, or go online to your state employment agency’s listings. Many, if not most, will say “Bilingual Preferred.” That means Spanish.

Job counselors will tell you Spanish is not required, just preferred. That’s so the employer can’t be accused of discriminating against English-only speakers.
But the Bilingual applicant is the one who will get hired, especially in retail or any jobs dealing with the public.
That’s because there are so many **customers** who are illegals, working for under-the-table cash, and who don’t speak English.
Boss man wants Spanish speaking employees who can help the customers spend that cash in his store / pizza parlor/ insurance agency/ auto dealership. English only = lost business.
These cash customers, in turn, have no motivation to learn English because we are everywhere catering to them in their own language, while allowing them to work tax-free, at the same time we’re supplying SNAP and housing to their anchor babies.
We even furnish provide welfare forms printed in their language, and offer a “free” translator, if needed, too.

It’s no wonder they hate us. We give them so many reasons. /s

So, you shop at the mexican grocery store in town?

Did I say it's a Mexican grocery store? Its not. It's a regular, large American-owned super market that caters so much to the large number of Mexicans around that it is run as I described. It's Food 4 Less. They have all the regular items one would find in any other market, plus lots of items for Mexican customers. But plenty of non-Mexicans shop there too. They have large markets in San Diego and nearby National City and Chula Vista. There are stores that cater almost exclusively to Mexicans. Food 4 Less is not one of them.

It would be great if, during Trump’s administration, we’d morph into an English-only country. The money we spend catering to non-English people is obscene. The printing alone must amount to a few billion dollars when every pamphlet, ballot, etc., must include a few languages.
