Texas threatens to 'exit' the federal refugee program over terrorist concerns
Houston Chronicle ^

Texas, which has taken in more refugees than any state in the nation over the past year, is threatening to leave the federal refugee program if the Obama administration does not meet its security demands.

The dispute comes as the Obama administration has announced a new goal of resettling 110,000 refugees in the United States in the coming year, including an unspecified increase in the number from Syria.

In a letter Wednesday to Robert Carey, director of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission said that unless Washington "unconditionally" approves the state's new plan controlling placements in Texas by September 30, the agency will "exit" the program.

Without an agreement, Texas would join Kansas and New Jersey in withdrawing state participation in the refugee program over the federal government's vetting procedures to screen out potential terrorists.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the letter was sent in response to the Office of Refugee Resettlement's "unwillingness" to approve the state's new refugee plan, which would require national security officials to ensure that refugees do not pose a security threat to Texas.

Austin is probably the only truly blue area. SA, Dallas and Houston are blue in the city proper but are completely surrounded by far more conservative burbs.

Speaking for SA the only place you will find pro-Hillary signs and bumper stickers are in town. Once you exit the city limits, especially North, you can still find Hillary signs - but they are the ‘Hillary for Prison 2016’ type.

Why is Texas in the program in the first place? I would have thought they would opt out from the beginning.

There are now at least 213 known muslim places of worship in Texas - lot of the credit for that goes to former Governor Perry. Mexico border is not far, wide open, staffing of border agents is insufficient, Feds don’t enforce current laws, and it is under funded. Also have to give blame for many of these issues to Joe Strauss who controls the Texas House agenda and is a HUGE RINO. Not sure why he doesn’t put a D after his name. Add to that all the bleeding heart libs who now call Texas home and you have a mess.

Keep thinking that all the people from Mexico will move to Texas and then we’ll just move down there but their first priority is to send their uneducated and criminals north.

Sorry pal but you’re incorrect. Greg Abbott is doing the same thing in this state that happened over a decade ago with federal highway funds when Kay Bailey Hutchinson was US Senator. Thanks but no thanks!

Greg Abbott is a very sharp guy when it comes to such matters. Legislation from the bench is the main hindrance to these dealings. Texans would rather pay for (and thereby approve of) federal mandates (with all the strings attached) ourselves. And if we don’t want what the feds want, guess what? C’ya!

It’s sad to see how weak states are compared to the Federal government.

If Obama and the Saudis ARAB SPRING started this whole refugee problem, tore up the middle east, killed millions of Christians, Muslims and Kurds, and CREATED ISIS.
Obama, Kerry, Clinton and all of their RINO cohorts should be in PRISON.

Add Dallas and San Antonio to your list of places not to move.

The Dallas area is fine, if you know which cities to avoid.

As I said in another comment on the thread, I currently live in a deep blue state but am leaving. Have already purchased another home elsewhere.

Here in Canada the Canadian government just announced it is working with George Soros’ foundation to increase private refugee sponsorship. We don't have a Texas to flee to sadly.

N and NE Dallas is decently Republican, but not necessarily conservative. And once you're out of the city, 5-10 min north on 75 you run through Collin County, which is one of the most conservative counties in the country.

N Austin, Round Rock area used to be pretty conservative (there's still pockets near my grandparents), but most of Austin's pop growth has been much more liberal city-slickers. Esp compared to Collin.

According to the story, Kansas and New Jersey have already opted out. So on this specific issue, it appears that these two states are more conservative than Texas!

so. are they saying that the states had a right not to take them but did anyways? Is the state saying that they did not have to accept the refugees but did so anyways and to just put up a front like they didn’t want them? Is this the state going against its people and just making theater?

....You know. Like being saying you are against Obutthole care and funding it anyways? Or increasing the size of government to the point of surpassing the amount of people in the work force? To blowing up the debt to a point of no return? I’m sick of the re-runs!!
