Marijuana Could Be the Answer to Curing Alzheimer's Disease, Study Shows
The Motley Fool ^ | September 18th, 2016 | Sean Williams

However, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies believe the cure to Alzheimer's disease might come from a readily available substance: marijuana.

In order to test their theory, researchers at the Salk Institute modified nerve cells to produce high levels of beta-amyloid. Researchers then noted that these higher levels of beta-amyloid production led to the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins and eventually nerve cell death. The ongoing death of these nerve cells is what leads to the progressive cognitive decline witnessed in Alzheimer's patients. This itself was an intriguing finding, as it was long believed that an immune-like response, not the proteins themselves, led to nerve cell death.

Now here's where things get interesting. As the researchers noted in their findings, nerve cells in the brain contain receptors that are activated by lipid molecules known as endocannabinoids, which are naturally produced by nerve cells. These endocannabinoids are believed to help nerve cells with their ability to send signals relating to appetite, pain sensation, and memory. Marijuana contains the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (more commonly known as THC), which is similar to endocannabinoids and can activate those same nerve cell receptors. In other words, the researchers at Salk Institute hypothesized that cannabis could block the receptors that lead to the release of pro-inflammatory proteins and prevent nerve cell death.

“I can’t wait to go to the nursing home.”

Really? Knowing full well your home after that one will be a funeral home?

It is still a FDA Schedule 1, newly re-affirmed as such. Has no medicinal value and is nothing more than a recreational drug.

And once again, a FReeper pees on the Tenth Amendment.

You sure do roll over a lot when it comes to the Constitution.

And just in time for the Boomers to hit the Alzheimer’s demographic. I’m shocked, shocked I say. Thank goodness they discovered it in the nick of time... /s

I don’t know about curing everything, but it sure relieved my aching muscles last night. And a hell of a lot more effective than the muscle relaxers and advil ever did.

Sounds like Marijuana is becoming the cure-all replacing Stem-Cells.

Lets get some controlled clinical studies before making claims. If it proves to be effective that would be a blessing for those who needs it.

I don’t know if this is legit or not. But I do know that the so called War on Drugs is the most misguided government policy since its predecessor back in the 1920’s

Misguided? At least Prohibition went through the legal\PROPER channels....no so much since or after (yet, is still the ‘law’ *somehow*).

Even if found conclusively to be legit, there are enough drug warrior cheerleaders (aka GOP nanny-stater’s) here to ‘keep up the *good* fight’....for the children, y’know /s

Aricept and Namenda are the most common Rxs for Alzheimer's right now and here are their common side effects...

Aricept

Namenda

And neither one does anything to improve the condition of Alzheimer's.

Here's an interesting video:

Cannabis oil (Canabidol CBD) without a prescription in all 50 states

I've been thinking of checking it out for pain relief and a sleep disorder.

“My point is that marijuana is claimed to cure anything and everything by those who are it’s proponents.”

Been using cannabis as medicine since February of 2015. It’s been a real life changer here. I thank God in Heaven ever day for giving us this wonderful plant.

Do I think it’s the cure all for everything or everyone? Of course not. Thankfully, it works for me. So let me use it in the privacy of my home & leave me alone.

From your link...

In November 2012 Tikun Olam, an Israeli medical cannabis facility, announced a new strain of the plant which has only cannabidiol as an active ingredient, and virtually no THC , providing some of the medicinal benefits of cannabis without euphoria.

Don't tell the drug warriors about this their heads will explode!

Indeed. I’m just trying to open some otherwise closed minds (hopefully without causing any heads to explode!) Information is power (and good.)

“I’ve been thinking of checking it out for pain relief and a sleep disorder.”

A friend has been suggesting this non THC oil to me, perhaps not this brand, but the oil, and I’ve been contemplating trying it. He claims it can add to the efficiency of pain relievers, working in conjunction with them. I figure it can’t hurt to try it. Decades ago I was quite the pot smoker, and I never experienced any pain relief, so I’m a bit skeptical, but certainly not for lack of trying, lol! I have zero desire to get “high” anymore, so the products that do not contain THC are perhaps worth a try. I did notice a disclaimer at the link you provided that states “These products are not intended to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any disease.”

I use Amazon for a lot of things. If you search Amazon for "cbd oil" you'll get a long list of options although I've never purchased the oil from Amazon.

Decades ago we may have known each other. :-)

I bake things using oils and sleep well, sometimes up to 14 hours if the dosage is off. Without that I sleep about 4 hours a night which kills me. I've tried OTC and prescriptions but nothing works as well or without side effects. I also need pain relief for things related to a car accident, a life of sparring and things I inherited from my parents. The butter I make works well for all symptoms but it took about 3 months to get the dosage correct.

The oils definitely works for many things. I often think it gets a bad reputation by pharmaceutical companies.

I'd try it and see how it works for you.

Yoga and stretching work wonders too. Probably moreso than smoking drugs.
