Pope Francis: Killing 'in the Name of God is Satanic'

ROME — Pope Frances urged religious leaders on Wednesday to tell their followers that any killing carried out in the name of God is "satanic."

The pontiff made the remarks during a Mass honoring Jacques Hamel, an 85-year-old priest murdered by ISIS-supporting teenagers who stormed his church in northern France in July.

"Killing in the name of God is satanic," the pope told the ceremony in the Vatican's Domus Santa Marthae chapel. "I would like it if all religions said this, 'To kill in the name of God is satanic.'"

Adel Kermiche and Abdel-Malik Nabil Petitjean, both 19, stormed the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray on July 26 and took six people hostage: Hamel, three nuns and an elderly couple.

They forced the priest to his knees and slit his throat while performing a "sort of sermon around the altar in Arabic," one of the nuns told France's BFMTV at the time.

Police shot both attackers dead as they ran out of the church shouting "Allahu Akbar," according to French officials.

"In the middle of the difficult moment that he was facing, in the middle of this tragedy that he saw coming, a gentle man, a good man, a man of brotherly love, did not lose the lucidity to accuse and say clearly the name of the assassin," the pope said on Wednesday, describing the priest's final moments. "He said very clearly, 'Go away Satan.'"

The pope also indicated that the priest could be on his way to beatification, the first step to sainthood.

"He accepted his martyrdom there on the altar of Christ," he added. "He gave his life for us so as not to deny Jesus. He is a martyr and martyrs are beatified."

I agree Pope Francis' point is, as usual, fragmentary and garbled.

"Killing" is not against the Eternal Law. Only unjust killing is wrong, because it is murder: that is, the intentional targeted ~OR~ indiscriminate killing of persons who are blameless, not aggressors, not guilty of a capital crime.

BTW, Muslims arguably do believe in "the One God"; but just "believing" in "God" or being a monotheist does not mean you are a person of Faith, as Christians understand Faith.

The Bible, in the original Hebrew text, says one should not murder or take another persons life unjustly.

I think you’re exactly right on the point of killing. It is a method of last resort to keep the evil in check. And I do believe they must have given cause for that judgment, as in killing innocents, or torturing people which can’t be stopped another way.

At any rate one small point, that may be nothing more than a simple toss away phrase.

I don’t consider myself to be a monotheist, as it relates to God. I believe in a Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Ghost (or spirit).

At the same time I believe in the one true God, in that I suppose I could be considered a monotheist as it relates to a possibility of numerous gods we should worship.

“Allah” is a name for God that pre-dates Islam and was incorporated by Muhummad when he rigged up his sect. Sort of like Christian preachers who use the name of Jesus but doesn’t really get them anywhere. (Mat. 7)

Agreed, The just killing of an aggressor, in self defense or the defense of the innocent, or the execution of a properly convicted evildoer who has been found certainly guilty of a capital crime, is not the same as murder.
