Eucharist desecrated, Missionaries of Charity assaulted in Argentina

Missionaries of Charity

The community of the Missionaries of Charity in Mar del Plata, Argentina, became the target of criminals late last week, as three men broke in, beat the sisters and desecrated their chapel.

According to reports, three unidentified men entered the house of the community – which was founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta – at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 25.

After beating and gagging the five sisters who reside there so they could not cry for help, the criminals ransacked every corner of the house and finally took 50 Argentinian pesos (approximately $3.30), which was the only cash the sisters had.

They also entered the chapel in search of valuable objects. They opened up the tabernacle and emptied out the consecrated hosts that were there in the ciborium, presumably to steal the sacred vessel. When they realized that it was not made of gold, they left it behind.

The congregation was founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who will be canonized by Pope Francis on September 4. The community has been present for 20 years in the city of Mar del Plata in the Buenos Aires province.

Their mission there focuses mainly on giving free care to terminally ill HIV/AIDS patients at the Queen of Peace Home.

On August 22, just three days before the attack, Bishop Antonio Marino of Mar del Plata had visited the community, in recognition of the upcoming canonization of their foundress and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

This marks the second time in recent weeks that the Eucharist was desecrated in Argentina. On August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, unidentified men entered Our Lady of Mercy parish in the Santa Fe province of Argentina, where they desecrated and stole a bronze tabernacle containing consecrated hosts.

An act of reparation was offered on August 17 in the desecrated church, which consisted of a Eucharistic Holy Hour and then a Mass presided by the Archbishop of Santa Fe, José María Arancedo.

“This calls us to increase our love for Jesus in the Eucharist, to strengthen our hearts joined to him, to strengthen our faith in the Lord, because these are times of the persecution of the Church, and like the first Christians we need to be strengthened and encouraged to walk with resolve on the path of faith,” he said.

Here's what struck me: the nuns provide free care for impoverished AIDS patients. The total amount of money they had in their house was 50 Argentinian pesos (approximately $3.30). And the perps didn't even bother stealing the vessels of the altar when they realized they were not gold.

It makes me think they were neither Catholics (in background) nor locals, since they dd not know the sisters are poor and even their liturgical items are poor. (I've prayed in MC chapels: they are very plain, almost unornamented, kind of like the traditional Quaker meetinghouse except that they have, in all its simple solemnity, the reserved Sacrament.)

Plus, even narcotraficantes who come from Catholic backgrounds generally have --- though they are ignorant brutes --- a residual respect for the Eucharist. They'd know it's some really bad juju to trample the Body of Christ underfoot.

So who did it? We don't know. We only know that the pure, the holy and the good are being targeted everywhere in the world.

Wow, looking at the middle photo, I see a Mohammad Magid.

My Doctors last name is Magid and he’s a Jew and thus I’m guessing they are totally unrelated, but he is gonna get a kick out of this when I show him!

It’s a rare last name is why I noticed.

Exactly, they are no threat; and should have NO enemies! The level of evil in our modern era has never been equaled, and I pray for these Holy Sisters and all the consecrated soldiers of the Church Militant!

Interesting.

Ask when you see him if there is an Arabic wing of the family.

They are friends of our Savior Jesus Christ. Very close friends. That makes them bitter enemies of satan and his demons.

Pray for their spiritual and material well-being.

Perhaps the perps believed the Sisters, being involved in caring for the sick, had drugs. Consider the case of the two nursing Sisters murdered in Mississippi only a few days ago.

I did read that the man who murdered the Mississippi nurse/nuns confessed, and the police think he acted alone. They are no longer in the active investigation phase: the police pretty much think they have their man. But no mention of drugs. He was on probation for a felony DUI, also had a prior with armed robbery. Article said he did not reveal a motive.

??

You've got a point, in both cases maybe somebody thought they could grab some prescription opiates.

I always have a (morbid?) curiosity about why people do such --- unimaginably --- evil things.

I usually figure it's something grubby, like drugs.

Agreed. Scary too. People like that can’t be reasoned with. You can’t count on them to think or act like members of a rational species.
