Russian meddling in U.S. election backfiring on Putin, hurting Trump
The Washington Post ^ | August 23, 2016 | James Hohmann

Eight years ago this month, Barack Obama’s high command became very worried after Russia invaded Georgia.

The first-term senator, then 47, had no meaningful national security experience, a liability Hillary Clinton had highlighted throughout the Democratic primaries. And he happened to be vacationing in Hawaii.

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, John McCain recounted a phone call he had just had with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. "Today, we are all Georgians,” the hawkish war hero said, drawing cheers from the crowd of several thousand.

The Obama team was worried about losing voters of Eastern European descent as a result of McCain's hard-line rhetoric on Russia. There are lots of Polish Americans, Ukrainian Americans and Lithuanian Americans who live in swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida. Many came to the United States to escape the Iron Curtain.

Now the script is completely reversed. Those voters for whom McCain fought so hard in 2008 are still out there. They normally would be very inclined to vote for someone like Trump — on paper, they look just like his core supporters — but Putin’s clear preference for him over Clinton (combined with Trump’s naiveté on all things Russia) gives them great pause.

I agree. I have seen no evidence of Russia. However, the Pope did meddle in US GOP primaries.

It is very easy to explain: According to the media, Never Trumpers, the GOPe, [the Never Trumpers and GOPe have taken up residence in the Hillary Camp] and the Democrat Party, everything Donald does or does not do is wrong. When they believe that he has not done enough wrong, they make up lies about things he did say or did not say. Or things that he did do or did not do. And it makes the Nervous Nellies crap in their pants and say, “I’m through with Trump.” That is it in a nutshell. One can use more words, more eloquent phrases, deeper philosophical terms to explain or describe it, but that is it. Ignore them and life will be simpler for you.

Thus, the "germ" for this article: no one needs to explain to the E. Europeans who Putin actually is, but the conservatives among them see the excuses being made for him (by other conservatives) and are asking themselves, WTF?

Example: "it's not true because the Dems claim it's true." Meanwhile, the world's most (recently) notorious hacker is clinking vodka glasses with Vladi. LOLOL

It’s bulls***, like all WaPo articles. WHen Kerry went to Serbia recently, he was greeted by a large gathering of Serbs all wearing Trump shirts and holding Trump signs.

I was just reminded of another example: the notion that Julian Assange “made it clear” that the Russians were not behind the last hacking attempt. Of course, he did nothing of the sort—and your typical E. European who has been bred to recognize agitrop is wondering: how does this BS make it on to a conservative website?

It’s the Washington Compost, which means it’s the exact opposite of reality.

It is a great crime against humanity that even one small sapling is murdered to provide the fiber on which to print the washington pest.

Wow, they are really getting desperate at the compost. The flop sweat is just pouring from this one.

Is Putin going to put up with this, or is there something he will do?

The entire article is complete nonsense conjured up by the Clintonistas now running that formerly well-respected newspaper. All of the liberal tree-huggers in D.C. should be howling their heads off over this horrible waste of perfectly good newsprint.

They are just trying to dampen down the sting of the next Wikileaks release. Don’t cover the crimes exposed; just say “it’s Russia’s fault!”

That’s exactly what this is. Now every one of Hillary’s crimes can be conveniently explained away.

"Can someone explain this article to me? I can find no evidence within of this mass number of eastern Europeans residing in America going against Trump, or of anything "backfiring". It's like The Washington Post and that nutjob Anne Applebaum think if they write it enough, it becomes true."

The Ukrainian newspaper "Svoboda" is extremely anti Trump. Most Ukies voted for obama and kasich. They'll vote for clinton now.
