Trump's big immigration reversal shaped by Christie, Giuliani says

TRENTON — Donald Trump's apparent pivot away from his calls for mass deportations of millions of undocumented immigrants is partially the result of prodding by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

And, Giuliani says, even more Christie-inspired changes to Trump's immigration stance will be forthcoming, like his call for tracking immigrant visas like Fedex packages, and using the E-Verify system to reduce illegal labor.

In an interview with NJ Advance Media on Thursday, Giuliani, a top adviser to the Republican presidential nominee, said Trump's recent reversal on immigration policy came after his inner circle for several weeks suggested a more nuanced, practical, and humane approach in dealing with the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Asked if Christie was responsible for Trump's softening approach to immigration, the former mayor responded: "The answer to that question is yes."

Trump's pledge to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. and deport 11 undocumented immigrants rallied supporters early in the campaign.

Christie, Giuliani said, "is not the only one" counseling a more moderate stance on those who immigrated illegally, "but he is of great value to him."

The Trump campaign declined to comment on Christie's involvement. The governor is an adviser to Trump and heads his transition effort.

A spokesman for Christie declined to comment.

Last summer, Trump vowed to employ a "deportation force" to expel all undocumented immigrants from the U.S.

But on Wednesday, Trump appeared at a town hall meeting with Fox News' Sean Hannity and said he wasn't sure if he wanted carry through on his prior promises to tear out the nation's entire unauthorized immigrant population root and branch.

I would add to your list a crucial #4. That is EVerify to assure that all jobs are filled by US citizens when they open up. And I want to hear Trump, himself, every chance he gets, state those four principles of his immigration policy. Without all four there’s too much room for mischief and not doing all it will take to save the US from invasion.

That’s funny.......and stupid.

No politician in their right mind should mention a person’s body mass...

.... b/c ....as you indicated....the Fat Vote must be immense (no pun intended—smirk).

“REVERSAL ON IMMIGRATION? FLIP FLOPPING? WHERE IS IT?”

You rightly point out what a fraud this whole notion that Trump has gone “soft” actually is. Trump’s success in the campaign continues to bring the evil ones who’ve been stabbing us in the back out into the light for us to see them as they truly are: enemies of the Constitution.

Vote Trump 2016

Then you work down into those which are chronic wards of the state.

There should be a time limit. Say six months. Any illegal found here after six months will have no chance for citizenship.

Empower state and local law enforcement with incarceration and deportation abilities.

Make everyone re-apply for the varied welfare benefits. Must show up in person and show a birth certificate. Anchor babies get to stay, stupid law, but mom and dad have to go. Baby becomes ward of the state in that case, mom and dad forfeit parental rights.

Occasionally, offer rewards to citizens for leads to illegals. This gets around the inevitable "profiling" and "discrimination" law suits.

"This is disinformation meant to disillusion and divide Trump supporters."

It's going to have the exact opposite effect. By articulating the Lyin' Ted position on immigration, Trump will be UNITING with the Lyin' Ted supporters. You can see from this: "https://www.tedcruz.org/cruz-immigration-plan-summary/" that's exactly what Trump is doing.

I heard the audience “vote” opposite of what you saw and heard. The ship ‘em out crowd was much bigger and louder than the soft on illegals crowd at that town hall.

At any rate, what the town hall showed was that Trump dropped a huge wedge issue into his own base.

Compassion can be held for the American people or foreigners who broke into our country, play racists for the left and suck us dry in education, health care and welfare. They dare to vote, too, and are given weight in population calculations when determining congressional representation numbers.

Trump led us to believe - America first.

How can an illegal pay taxes when it is illegal for him to be employed in this country? That is, if we are really enforcing the law and all. Is Trump going after the cheap labor express that hires illegals? Or is that too harsh?

And it is not working as far as dividing Trump supporters goes. It is separating the pseudo Trump supporters from the bona fide Trump supporters.

Nonsense. It’s called a wedge issue to diminish a candidate’s support among supporters. Get Trump down to Rino size and enthusiam.

No way it’s only 11 million illegals... It’s got to be twice that, easily.

Yeah, that surprised me too. I don’t understand it as they are breaking the law by being here illegally. They may obey our other laws, but they are breaking that law.

I think Trump has a big heart. I don’t think he wants to deliberately cause pain. It’s such a difficult situation, though. Questions to ponder:

If you are going to let people stay, how long do they have to have been here? Five years? Then why not four?

If kids were brought here and grew up here and only know America, do you send them back?

If you are going to let people stay, are these just people who crossed the border and would be going back to bad lives or does this include people who have overstayed their visas?

If someone has a family with kids who have been raised here or were born here, do you let the parents stay to keep the family intact, especially if they are working and not causing trouble?

It’s a difficult situation. I don’t think there is a one size fits all approach. If Trump goes that route, it could give him some wiggle room with both sides.

If you give some form of amnesty, even if it isn’t citizenship, what do we do years from now when we have more illegals in this country? Even if Trump does everything right with the border and visa system, some people will still come in illegally. It’s just reality. Hopefully many less, but still, there will be some who slip through the cracks. Do they get citizenship then eventually?

The bottom line is that if Trump were to give them legalization without amnesty, what would happen is that the Democrats would come along within the decade running on the platform that these people are part of our country and should be made citizens. A Democrat President, likely helped by Republicans, would get it done. Then you have millions of votes. Do you think these people will be grateful to Trump for letting them stay? If we look at Hispanics who are citizens, the majority vote Democrat. Would that change if Trump made the millions of illegal immigrants who are Hispanic legal? I doubt it. I think they would still vote majority Democrat. I also think that the Hispanics who would be given citizenship by Democrats will also vote majority Democrat. This means that it will be very difficult for the Republicans to ever win an election. It’s suicide of a party. It may be politically incorrect to say, but I think it’s true.

Well, in the past Trump had said multiple times illegals had to go and he was going to have a deportation force to remove everybody here illegally from the country. That’s why the Hannity comments caused headlines and upset some backers like Coulter (although she of course is still supporting him).

I agree that he needs to do a speech to settle any confusion.

It seems many forget that to govern, you have to start by winning the election.

You can’t win in without attracting enough voters.

Many people want their POTUS to be kind and compassionate and reasonable - hence the support for the other primary candidates. Each was the preferred choice of some, but not enough to win. Women, in particular -at least suburban women - need to trust the guy. I’ve also met men with the same idea - especially those who are not strongly ideological. They want to trust someone.

Going forward, Trump’s team must realize they need Republican votes and have to get them on board. Attracting media attention and attracting voters are not identical. If he changes words to make his message appeal to more voters, I think he is smart.

The big surprise is going to be when they find out there are 25 million illegals here. If you can track them like packages you will find out the MSM has made the problem seem small it is not.

But cut off unearned income credits, welfare, food stamps, and stop educating their kids for free.

In Las Vegas alone 100,000 of the 300,000 students in the school district are illegals. School as so bad my kids had to be home schooled to learn.

Everify every hire, and go back and recheck every employee to establish status. Fine employers who break the law hiring without everify.

Just wait until he catches them sending money remittences back to Mexico. That is how we will find the illegals, their bank accounts and residences. Easy. Have all the utility companies run everify off their data base for addresses.

I knew what it is called. I knew its purpose. And I know that it will get worse as time goes along. We Trump supporters are in for a dog fight. We are in for a knock down drag out no quarter asked, no holds barred barroom brawl. Those faint of heart and the hireling will flee. Many will say, Donald, I supported you until_______". In the end, he will either win or lose. Whatever the outcome we will be by his side. The only thing I can't say is how many will be by his side. Whether it will be two or 3 hundred million is unknown at this point in time. I only know that there will be one.

If you so choose, feel free to believe whatever the media says about him. And they plan to say plenty. None of it will be true, but it won't stop them from saying it. Nor will it stop it from being posted on Free Republic.com

I agree. The word ‘flip-flop’ is Ruling Class spin.

Trump will allow SOME to enjoy touchback-immigration. He never said otherwise.

It’s a complex matter. For example:

‘The legal challenge was brought by Batalla Vidal, a 25-year-old undocumented man living in New York who was brought to the states from Mexico when he was seven ... Vidal — who is seeking a medical assistant’s degree — is now suing immigration officials to restore his three-year authorization.’

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3463401/posts

It would be perverse to cut someone’s education in half. Worthless to everyone. Not to mention, the man has been in the US for most of his life, ever since he was Seven.

If he is assimilating — no violent crimes, no burglaries, etc. — if he has not committed any moral turpitude and never had so much as a DUI — I’m not opposed to him being allowed permanent US residency as a US taxpayer who never receives benefits other than to finish his education.

And with no benefits after education I would not even mind him paying 1/2 the normal tax rate.

But most importantly, he should not get any fast track to voting rights. It should take him twice as long as someone who came here legally.

That’s pretty tough on a guy who came here as a seven-year-old.
