The guy potentially endangered other lives by shooting “across the street”. In my CHL class, we were taught not to do that. The instructor spent a great deal of time teaching us about collateral damage and liability.

4. I’m old, and my depth perception isn’t as good as it used to be. I thought he was coming towards me.

He turned and he appeared to have something in his hand would have been my defenseAnd it appeared he was circling, thus trying to take advantage of my age and slower reflexes.

Yeah that will work in the movies, but that’s about it :)
And if this guy was hot in the back, the “i thought he had a gun” wont fly either. He’ll get toasted.

Can’t shoot a fleeing perp under most circumstances.
Maybe if he’s armed and “maneuvering” against you.
But shooting at perp who is running away is got net you manslaughter at the very least.

You have to SIT right in front of the screen, getting a program to automatically refresh would help.
Fingers should be in typing position (formally taught position)
Having a keyboard short cut to reply would give one the edge!!!!

Typing class with manual typewriters helped. Except sometimes I’m not as light on my touch as I should be. And I keep going for the carriage return arm. LOL!

His defense should be that his reactions are slow, he aimed the gun while the defendant was approaching him, then by the time his brain got his finger to move on the trigger the guy had turned away. Makes sense if the dude is old enough.

No, sane world’s don’t believe in vigilantism. And once the guy has gotten away that’s exactly what it is. You can defend yourself, you can even defend your property while it’s under threat, but revenge is not OK. At least in most jurisdictions.

I was taught by a retired cop that if you shoot someone on your lawn or doorstep be sure to drag the body into the house. I've heard that before and it's BS. There was a case here in Florida where a guy tried it. He was acquitted of the shooting, but convicted of tampering with evidence.
The morale of the story is, if you can't convince the police that you thought that your life was in danger, don't shoot someone.

Any person with an ounce of sense realizes that in America 2016 A.D. the criminal element is favored. Is homeowner in deep doo doo? Probably.
Do I have a problem with the idea of thieves getting shot while fleeing? Not really.

You need to know your local laws. In some places the use of deadly force is strictly limited to an immediate threat to life or threat of grave physical harm and limited to what a “reasonable (logical, well schooled in legal precedent, unexcited) man” would do.
In most jurisdictions (not all) someone running away from you is no longer a deadly threat, and the police should be called to try to settle things.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Yes there are places and reasons why you can shoot a fleeing felon, but you had better really know the laws before you do.

Point of clarification:
In Texas it is perfectly legal to shoot a fleeing perp to protect life or property if there is no other way to stop the perp.
Thus, an old feeble man can shoot a young fleeing perp, but a young healthy man cannot shoot an old perp in a scooter as he absconds at 4 mph.
A man named Joe Horn taught me that the day he shot 2 burglars, one in the back and one in the side, as they burgled his neighbor’s house, all in front of a police detective who witnessed the entire thing.
He killed the perps. He did not break the law.
