~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Knox, Kentucky

Fort Knox is a United States Army post in Kentucky south of Louisville and north of Elizabethtown. The 109,000 acre base covers parts of Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties. It currently holds the Army human resources Center of Excellence to include the Army Human Resources Command, United States Army Cadet Command and the United States Army Accessions Command.

The most recent era of transformation at Fort Knox began in 2005 with the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission. The Armor Center and School relocated to Fort Benning to merge with the Infantry Center and form the Maneuver Center of Excellence. In addition, the Armor School relocated to Fort Benning and, as with the Infantry School, is subordinate to the MCoE.

Relocated to Fort Knox were the Human Resources Command, Army Accessions Command and Cadet Command to join Recruiting Command information of the Human Resource Center of Excellence.

In May 2010, The Human Resource Center of Excellence, the largest office building in the state, opened at Fort Knox. The new center employs nearly 4,300 soldiers and civilians.

Fort Knox is one of only three Army posts (the others being Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Sam Houston, Texas) that still have a high school located on-post. Fort Knox High School, serving grades 9–12, was built in 1958 and has undergone only a handful of renovations since then.

The Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor was established in 1949 to preserve historical artifacts and archival materials relating to Mechanized Cavalry and Armor and General George S. Patton Jr.   It is one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of armored vehicles spanning 1917 to the present and has the finest collection of Patton artifacts in the world.

There are static displays of various tanks, other armor and a few helicopters. The museum also includes a number of Patton's personal effects, dating from the World War II, including his office van and touring car.

Hiya radu!

Much, much cooler, we're sitting at 73 degrees now instead of the 93 we had last week! More cooler weather too.

But popsicles still work regardless of the temps!

Not much happening with me today, grocery shopping happens tomorrow. Oh, I did get a car wash to remove some of the summer dust.

Wuz new your way?

In Hawaii, I got a beautiful reddish-brown horse named Koa, presumably because of his color which was like the tropical wood of the same hue.

Anyway, Koa was a such a brat that I demanded that the trail boss and I switch horses, which we did, right in the middle of a stream (I know, I know).

Later, I found out that Koa was rather famous on the island for being a “handful”.

In fact, he wasn’t named after the hardwood at all, but after a Hawaiian war god.

LOL...the good ol’ days!

How was your day at headquarters? What’s the word in TN about the election?

WOOHOO for cooler temps! That’s a NICE drop y’all had today. And more to come? Lucky, lucky, lucky! It was in the low 80s here and is already down to 68. Open window weather!
Gonna be back in the 90s again by Wed. though. :-(

Slow day at the HQ but that was expected. Stopped by the grocery store on the way home and dang it, I forgot to get some popsicles! Guess I’ll have to settle for a bowl of ice cream tonight. LOL!
