~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Knox, Kentucky

Fort Knox is a United States Army post in Kentucky south of Louisville and north of Elizabethtown. The 109,000 acre base covers parts of Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties. It currently holds the Army human resources Center of Excellence to include the Army Human Resources Command, United States Army Cadet Command and the United States Army Accessions Command.

The most recent era of transformation at Fort Knox began in 2005 with the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission. The Armor Center and School relocated to Fort Benning to merge with the Infantry Center and form the Maneuver Center of Excellence. In addition, the Armor School relocated to Fort Benning and, as with the Infantry School, is subordinate to the MCoE.

Relocated to Fort Knox were the Human Resources Command, Army Accessions Command and Cadet Command to join Recruiting Command information of the Human Resource Center of Excellence.

In May 2010, The Human Resource Center of Excellence, the largest office building in the state, opened at Fort Knox. The new center employs nearly 4,300 soldiers and civilians.

Fort Knox is one of only three Army posts (the others being Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Sam Houston, Texas) that still have a high school located on-post. Fort Knox High School, serving grades 9–12, was built in 1958 and has undergone only a handful of renovations since then.

The Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor was established in 1949 to preserve historical artifacts and archival materials relating to Mechanized Cavalry and Armor and General George S. Patton Jr.   It is one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of armored vehicles spanning 1917 to the present and has the finest collection of Patton artifacts in the world.

There are static displays of various tanks, other armor and a few helicopters. The museum also includes a number of Patton's personal effects, dating from the World War II, including his office van and touring car.

Good evening/morning, TADSLOS...you did spend a few years here. Being away for 20 years must mean lots of changes.

If there was a cash stash in her part of the house, we have yet to find it. I doubt there is one any way.
But we wouldn’t have the pickers in the house. The barn is where they’d most likely find stuff they’re interested in.

But we’ll never get them here. We’ll both pass on and whoever ends up with the farm will have to deal with all the junk the family’s hoarded over the past 150 years. LOL!

Oh my gosh....150 years...surely hubby has stuff he would want a friend to have. He needs to tag them and put them in a will or someone gets his “good stuff”.

We’ve been working on the grands choosing and taking stuff they want for a couple years now.

The HRC complex is named in honor of Lieutenant General Timothy Maude, who was killed at the Pentagon on 9-11. A fire truck that was heavily damaged while fighting the blaze at the Pentagon is now on display at the Patton Museum.

Yes, that’s how long ago his great-grandfather bought the farm and I think they’ve all been hoarders. It’s insane the amount of junk we’ve run across and tossed over the years. But we’ve barely scratched the surface. We just can’t get motivated to dig because there’s SO MUCH to go through.

I’ve tried to get him to do a will but have had no luck. Neither of us has children or grands so the stuff won’t be handed down to them.

I just keep hammering on him and maybe one day he’ll listen.
