Josh Thomas, an American amateur brewer who was based in Hong Kong for five years, has tried what he described as an absolutely insane amount of Asian beers. He said that Taedonggang is significantly better than any other mass-market beer on the continent, chiefly because the best-selling beers of North Koreas neighbors Cass and Hite in South Korea, Snow and Tsingtao in China, and Asahi Super Dry and Kirin in Japan are rice-based, light, and somewhat watered down. But since rice is so scarce in North Korea, brewers there tend to rely more on barley, which makes beer darker, maltier, and richer.
The lack of sufficient electricity for large-scale refrigeration, likewise, limits what sorts of beers are produced. Higher brewing temperatures thus yield more ales and steam beer. Thomas likened Taedonggang 1 to the American beer Anchor Steam.

"We put in just a touch of formaldehyde for flavor."
And just a little bit of urine from the Great Leader.
Who cares?
The beer I’ve had in China has almost no alcohol in it. Beer in Korea is better, but still not that great,
Tsingtao (for export) isn’t too bad. That’s because it used to be a German port a long time ago.
Some African beers are good for the same reason.
“best beer in Asia” would not be a distinction worth bragging about....
In Vietnam I heard about “Ba-Muoi-Ba” & formaldehyde. But a Vietnamese told me forget the rumors, if you ever visit the “33” brewery you will never touch the stuff.
Best beer there was San Miguel from the Philippines.
Love Anchor Steam but it’s over $9 @ 6 pack here. That’s more than Guinness Extra Stout, even.
Sam Magoo ( as it is affectionally called) was the official mascot beer of the USCGC BASSWOOD (WLB-388), way back in the barrios of Olongapo you could sometimes buy these for a few cents per.
And it was much safer than mojo.
Sorry, not buying it - the only things made proficiently in North Korea are deep ignorance and abject slavery.
Probably not the North Koreans but who knows. I read pot is actually legal in North Korea.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of Nork products is “quality”.
:D
Chinese/ Asian beer? Why?
Are you are a glutton for punishment?
If you go to some of the islands in the Caribbean - Dominica, Antigua, St. Kitts, etc. - they all have their own local lagers that are really terrific and which you can’t get anywhere else.
Meth is legal in NK.
I wonder if human excrement barley fertilizer is listed on the ingredients?
so....they oppress their people more brutally than practically anyone else on the planet, they threaten us and their neighbors with nukes, they kidnap citizens of other nations, and their own troops are forced to eat tree bark.
But they brew some really righteous beer, so they’re cool.
