The unintended consequence of a mileage tax is to undermine decades of the government trying to encourage higher gas mileage through higher gas prices.

Somebody needs to make a corollary curve to the Laffer curve which charts out the point where the government says "screw it, tax everybody!"

Perhaps phase one of a mileage tax, but do you REALLY think they’ll simply stop at a flat mileage tax? Of course not. Once the tax and associated tracking system are in place, they can do LOTS OF THINGS, such as adjust the tax to vehicle size (or global warming impact), adjust the tax to where you drive and when you drive, and even base the tax rate on income level, if they really want to...since all of the above only involves linking existing databases.

They dodged a bullet, but I doubt even the opponents fully understand what’s REALLY in store with mileage taxes.
