‘We’ve lost one of our best, our finest’ (NM police officer killed by Ohio shooter)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sheriff’s deputies are answering all calls in Hatch so the small, now 7-person department can mourn the loss of 33-year-old officer Jose Chavez, who was gunned down in a traffic stop Friday.

“We’ve lost one of our best, our finest,” Doña Ana County Sheriff Enrique ‘Kiki’ Vigil said at a mid-day press conference in Las Cruces. “We’re mourning with the rest of law enforcement here in the county.”

Chavez died at the University Medical Center in El Paso, TX, Friday night after authorities say he was shot and killed by 38-year-old Jesse Hanes, who was wanted for an Ohio murder.

Hanes, who was still in a hospital Saturday for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, has been charged with an open count of murder for Chavez’s death.

James Nelson, who was traveling with Hanes in Hatch and was wanted in the same Ohio murder, has also been arrested, but isn’t facing charges for Chavez’s death. He’s charged with being a fugitive from justice and was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

At the time of Chavez’s shooting, Hanes was wanted in connection to the July 25 killing of 62-year-old Theodore Timmons in Ohio.

Timmons, who was a transit bus driver, was found dead in his home with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a report by the Chillicothe Gazette.

When black people kill, other black people find all sorts of excuses for the killers; they help the perpetrators elude capture and avoid punishment. Well I have been to Hatch a few times, and bought green chilis in Hatch, and as a matter of fact had hatch green chilis on pork chops tonight! Deadly violence is a stranger to this agricultural oasis where everybody seems to know everybody. Prayers for the police officer and family.
