Syrian rebels 'seize key town Manbij from IS'
BBC ^ | 6 Aug 2016 | BBC

A US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters has seized most of a key Syrian city from so-called Islamic State (IS), activists and commanders say.

Small numbers of IS militants are still resisting, using civilians as human shields, the alliance says.

News outlets are starting to call Manbij captured, as ISIS is collapsing rapidly into the last square kilometer, after two months of siege urban warfare.

It has been a hard fight for the city, which was the center of foreign fighters (Westerners) for ISIS. ISIS made one of its strongest efforts to keep Manbij - sending in reinfocements just before it was surrounded, using thousands of IEDs, and extensively using civilians as human shields.

Our coalition supported the effort with over 600 airstrikes, while the Kurdish YPG, with its Arab allies of the SDF, bravely and unrelentingly pressed ISIS on the ground - door to door. Over 2,000 ISIS jihadis have been killed, including many (probably most) of those Westerners who joined ISIS in Syria. Those dead fools will not be returning home to attack the West. The final holdouts will likely be killed in the next day or two.

Additionally, a treasure trove of intelligence has been captured from ISIS - terabytes of digital information and over 10,0000 documents = much of it pertaining to its assets and plans targeted at the West.

What comes next after Manbij? It is a turning point in the war against ISIS, and in the development of Kurdish administration in Northern Syria.

This could have happened a long time ago if more Syrian girlymen had chosen to stay and fight for their country rather than to run away and hide like a little baby in America.

“how long before obama orders US air strikes against the folks who are displacing his “brothers” in ISIL?”

Most likely, he will wait until after the election, and unleash the Turks on them...

Sounds like propaganda. Hope it’s true.

"a key Syrian city"

Is there any town/city/bridge/pile of dirt that's not described as "key"?

“Sounds like propaganda. Hope it’s true.”

It’s my opinion. No doubt others have escaped, were assigned elsewhere in Syria, and non-Westerner ISIS jihadis will infiltrate the West to attack.

But the main force of their Western recruits in Syria were surrounded in Manbij, and pretty much killed down to the last.

Map of Syrian Civil war
http://syria.liveuamap.com/

Red is Syrian government forces.
Yellow is the Kurds (aka YPG).
Black is ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh.
Green is the “moderate” terrorist rebels.

This map is updated constantly. Looks like ISIS is surrounded by the Kurds.

“Is there any town/city/bridge/pile of dirt that’s not described as “key”? “

Manbij was key for two reasons:

1. It was the main center for Westerners who went to join ISIS, and where they did the majority of their planning of attacks against the West. Nicknamed “Little London”, English and German had become common languages around town.

2. Manbij was the major population center on the remaining supply route between Turkey and the ISIS capital of Raqqa. After securing Raqqa, the SDF only has to secure about 10 miles of Countryside, to cut off the majority of ISIS from their main source of all supply. Closing that door is a strategic checkmate on the so-called “Caliphate”.

Are these the “good” rebels, the “bad” rebels, or “as yet to be defined” rebels?
