A Dallas man who worked at Citibank Regents Campus in Irving, Texas, in 2012 and 2013, Lennon Ray Brown, and who admitted causing damage to a protected Citibank computer, was sentenced today by U.S. District C. Godbey to 21 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $77,200 in restitution, announced U.S. Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas.

the government read a text that Brown sent to a coworker shortly after he shut down Citibank’s system that read, “They was firing me. I just beat them to it. Nothing personal, the upper management need to see what they guys on the floor is capable of doing when they keep getting mistreated. I took one for the team. Sorry if I made my peers look bad, but sometimes it take something like what I did to wake the upper management up.”

Seems like a slap on the wrist if the bank business was compromised that badly, but again they know that it is not possible to get blood from turnips.

The incredible thing is that someone so illiterate and so stupid was employed by Citibank in the first place.

Specifically, at approximately 6:03 p.m. that evening, Brown knowingly transmitted a code and command to 10 core Citibank Global Control Center routers, and by transmitting that code, erased the running configuration files in nine of the routers, resulting in a loss of connectivity to approximately 90% of all Citibank networks across North America.

A. Why would such a self-destruct command even exist.
B. Why did this guy have access to run such a command.

Says something about Citibank's computer security procedures, or lack thereof.

< I can’t seem to find a pic of the perp.

With a name like Lennon Ray Brown you'd think it would be obvious but since it's a white collar crime and not one of violence so it sort of catches you off balance. Sort of like finding a gray hair in a blonde who's only 20 yrs old. Highly unusual.

Some nightmare bosses may be conducive to such “dreams” — however it is absolutely insane to burn bridges. The nightmare boss may end up being fired and you might want to come back some day after he has been. Not scorching the earth is a good policy.

Doesn’t Citibank do backups? Or have a redundant system?
Shutting down a single server should not shut down a properly configured system.
Even my home system can immediately sense that a computer is offline and a second PC takes over without pausing.
I host Vietnamese films for my wife on a system made with just 2 Dell $250 refurbs. If a machine goes down (or does the Windows update reboot) the other machine continues and the content delivered to the TV doesn’t even momentarily pause. I also use the same system for word processing, web surfing and other stuff.
It’s inconceivable that a bank wouldn’t do this.

I'm mildly surprised that things like this don't happen more often, given the constant round of layoffs most large corporations undergo.

Sounds like “ssh admin@machine rm [somefile]” on Linux or UNIX. If he’d wanted to have been even more evil he could have blown away the tenth one too.

But the dark kind of mind necessary to carry out such evil also blinds one’s thinking. If Citibank had actually wronged him, his best move would have been to give it to God, get another job, and just quit. God, when trusted by the wronged, has a way of orchestrating what in other worldviews is sometimes called “karma.” Because the one doing the wrong has also brought about his own blindness too.

I had a boss a few years ago who was a jerk and I left the company. For the next three years this boss had to deal with another difficult and mercurial man in another division of the company — one that I was beginning to befriend and I might have made quite a difference to this boss in dealing successfully with. With me out of the picture... the jerk reaped the consequences and nothing evil or illegal was done by me.

It’s inconceivable that a bank wouldn’t do this.

Actually it is perfectly conceivable. In all likelihood their internal policies and procedures (that must be followed at all times) probably dictate some sort of expensive configuration that they believe would negatively impact shareholder value.
