It was a scheme designed to offer Syrian refugees a new life in Scotland, away from the horrors of their war-ravaged homeland.
But some of the first to be given sanctuary in Rothesay eight months ago have spoken of their unhappiness on Bute, saying it is ‘full of old people’ and a place ‘where people come to die’.
Argyll and Bute Council was among 16 Scottish local authorities to sign up for the initiative, with the first 100 Syrian refugees flown to the UK and on to Scotland in November last year. But Abd, who had been making trips to Glasgow to find work, said: ‘I didn’t expect to come to this island. We thought we were going to London or Manchester. But whenever we say anything about moving off the island, we are told “We had to pay a lot of money to bring you here”. ‘I feel like it’s an obligatory residence. I feel humiliated. I didn’t come here for anyone to control me.

Fifty years ago, Fang was stationed in Turkey in the U.S.
Air Force. He said at that time, the Turkish women did most
of the work while the men lounged around on steps and in the

It was peaceful enough when he was over there except for
one major earthquake that killed thousands of people. Fang
was camping out on a river bank in a sleeping bag.
They wanted to go to the big city lights where there are lots of stores, parties, alcohol and prostitutes. So, go already. A true refugee would appreciate living anywhere so that’s proof they aren’t refugees.
Can you imagine, if they knew the true and Living God, how happy they could be at a sight like this? I guess we all are inveterate complainers, but these people seem incapable of being pleased. Any time. Anywhere. Any era.
