Sowell: Black Votes Matter
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 26, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/25/2016 1:22:40 PM PDT by jazusamo

Black votes matter. If Republicans could get 20 percent of black votes, the Democrats would be ruined. This is highly unlikely, given the approach used by Republicans. However, the point is that Democrats must not only continue to get nine-tenths of black votes, they also need to get a high turnout of black voters on election day.

People who expected the election of President Barack Obama to lead to racial healing and a post-racial society failed to take account of the political reality that racial healing and a post-racial society would, at a minimum, reduce black voter turnout.

Black votes matter to many politicians — more so than black lives. That is why such politicians must try to keep black voters fearful, angry and resentful. Racial harmony would be a political disaster for such politicians.

Racial polarization makes both the black population and the white population worse off, but it makes politicians who depend on black votes better off.

Hillary Clinton desperately needs black votes in this year's close election. Promoting fear, anger and resentments among blacks — and, if possible, paranoia — serves her political interest. Barack Obama has mastered the art of keeping black voters aroused while keeping white voters soothed — thanks in part to the gullibility of much of the public, who mistake geniality and glib rhetoric for honesty and good will.

" People who expected the election of President Barack Obama to lead to racial healing and a post-racial society” were terminally naive.

“Problem is many of them are either deaf or are unable to read English.”

Deaf and dumb is fixable. It’s the over-emotional brute that doesn’t care to listen or understand that stands in the way of ever being able to comprehend the message.

Sorry, Tommy, but we’re not going to bribe blacks to vote for us or cater to their racial grievance fantasies.

Since he never said nor even implied that, where are you getting that from?

I think Sowell is just pretty much announcing the high likelihood that democrats will fail to win enough votes to install hillary, even with cheating involved...

however he is also pointing out that the democrat plantation provides no solutions for the plantation mentality of its residents... and that we need to take every opportunity to move the percentage that ARE moveable, by any means that is possible.

when we win, it would be nice to announce that trump republicans and conservatives have moved a significant portion to this side of the table... and have some solid NUMBERS to prove it... so that this 90plus percent wave of entitlement seekers, swings back this way a little.

Well, he says our approach is wrong but doesn’t suggest another approach. However, the democrats are getting a higher share of their vote, and we know what approach they are using, hence my comment that we are not going to adopt that approach.

If Sowell thinks their is a third approach that would work without bribing blacks or catering to their fantasies, he should suggest it.

There is another way, which the GOP has shown reluctance to do... just going into the Black community and ASKING for their vote instead of reflexively writing it off. If a party ignored you, would you be anxious to support it ?

The GOP has tried this, at least to some extent, but it doesn’t seem to accomplish anything. Why should they waste resources on something that pays no dividends?

I’ve never been a follower of Sowell, but this is still disappointing.

It would pay dividends if done rightly. The pale pink Republican efforts in the past often failed to recognize the actual internal dynamics in the communities, where the Leftist narrative has been the only one heard, because of bullying tactics by the agitators.

There is a sizeable minority, at least, in many of those neighborhoods, who long for good Police protection; who silently wish someone would stop the flood over the Southern border, which terribly diminishes the job prospects for Black youth; and who identify with other Trump issues.

Look for Trump to get several times the percentage vote that Romney & McCain received.

I disagree, I think the party has done next to nothing where Black voters are concerned in the past 4-5 decades. They’ve also been terrible with backing Black candidates, while simultaneously “touting” them, they give them almost no $$. Can’t win races that way.
