Police are searching for two burglary suspects after Sgt. Craig “Hutch” Hutchinson was killed in a shooting at his house early Monday morning.

The sergeant was shot at his home on Oak Meadow Drive in the Cimmaron neighborhood, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sheriff Greg Hamilton said Hutchinson radioed the department around 1:22 a.m. when he saw suspects running around his backyard. By 1:32 a.m. when officers arrived at Hutchinson’s house he was found on the ground in the backyard near a creek. He was transported to a Round Rock Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Our officer came up on them and found individuals in his shed and I think that’s when the confrontation occurred,” said Hamilton. “At this time we don’t have any more information.”

Round Rock Police tell KXAN they are asking people in the neighborhood to stay inside their homes. There is a large police presence off of McNeil Road near the intersection of SH 45 and MoPac. A SWAT team, DPS Troopers, Pflugerville police and an Air One helicopter are assisting with the search for the suspects.

Portions of Southbound Interstate 35 were closed Monday morning as the deputy’s body was taken from the hospital to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office in downtown Austin.

Hutchinson is known for cracking multiple burglary cases across his career with the department. He has been in the service for 32 years and was planning on retiring in September. His family has been notified.

Oops, hit Post too soon. I wanted to add: Only ten minutes was still too much time.

Starsky would have been right around him.

All kidding aside, RIP officer.

10 minutes. I presume the officer was armed to venture outside, but just the same, 10 minutes is too long and is reason we need to be armed. And why did he go outside instead of wait for the police?

I live in rural N Nevada. I would be lucky to have a deputy arrive before 20 minutes.

10 minutes? I lived in Round Rock off and on for two years about a decade ago (for work). Its not a big town.

Says he saw them creeping around outside near his shed. Sounds like robbery not specifically targeting him. Should have let loose the dogs first.

Google maps shows it is 10 mins from the police dept to the man’s house. The good law abiding officers didn’t break any speed limits getting to him. As if there wasn’t a patrol car closer.

I called yesterday on a couple of racers. Never did see any sign of LEO.
