he brush fire raging in the rugged mountains of Santa Clarita Valley has burned more than 22,000 acres, threatening hundreds of homes as firefighters battled Sunday to keep the fire from spreading.

Mandatory evacuations were still in place Sunday for about 1,500 residents in parts of Sand and Placerita canyons, as well as for others along Little Tujunga Canyon Road.

So far, 18 structures have been destroyed and another damaged in the Bear Divide and Sand Canyon areas, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The 14 Freeway in the Santa Clarita Valley was closed in both directions late Sunday afternoon as a precaution because of strong winds in the fire zone, authorities said.

The northbound lanes of the freeway, from the 5 Freeway to Santiago Canyon, and the southbound lanes, from Avenue N to Soledad Canyon, have been closed to traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was not clear when the freeway would be reopened.

Sad to see lefties homes burning.

That part of LA County isn't as left as you might think. The Oaktree gun club is near there and I'd be a crying shame if anything happened to it.

Northern LA county tends to be a more conservative. It is sometimes referred to as the bible belt.

It is tragic.

This area always elects a Republican congressman. You need to keep your nastiness to yourself.

Sad to see lefties homes burning.

this the gateway to the Antelope Valley - the only 'lefties' here are the Section 8 voucher holders that were sent up there.

Southern California has only two seasons. Fire and mud. The fires destroy all the plant life holding the soil in place and the rain washes all the mud down the hill sides.

There was one fire I saw where a man was filmed running
ahead of a fire that had just started. Wonder if is this fire?.
Hope that firebug gets to stay in jail as long as Charles Manson.
Would be great to see a good soaking rain

That’s a hateful comment. My daughter used to live right there but moved to Ventura, and she’s no leftie.

I know people who live out there, d%$k and they sure as hell aren't lefties.

Some information for people who aren't like ^ that ahole: KTLA 5 has much better coverage and a better story than the LA Times, they actually give a damn about local news.

For me at least this area is best known for the gun ranges, great housing prices, horse ranches, and excellent driving roads.

Two major outdoor gun ranges are in the area, Oaktree and Angeles, but it looks like they aren't in any danger judging by the direction the fire's spreading.

They've apparently run out of space for large animals at the nearby dam (which was the only one within riding distance) so they're opening up new evacuation centers in Lancaster and Woodland Hills, which means expect to see quite a few large animal trailers on the roads with skittish animals for the next day or two. I hope they warn drivers in the area too, most of them aren't used to driving around horses.

Interesting fact, roughly 4-5,000 California firefighters are minsec inmates that are part of a Department of Corrections program. The fire isn’t that far from three of their prison camps that house around 240 inmates that are trained firefighters including search and rescue.

UPDATE:

Wildfire ripped through like ‘freight train,’ destroying homes near Santa Clarita

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-fire-destruction-20160724-snap-story.html

“This is a very serious fire,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich said at a news conference Sunday. “When we tell people to evacuate … they need to evacuate.”

As offshore winds whipped from the southwest, the flames moved northeast toward Soledad Canyon and Acton, where fire officials warned residents to prepare for evacuations.

Years of drought have created unprecedented conditions for fires to intensify and spread rapidly, fire officials said at Sunday’s news conference.

It is not.

That was footage Bernie Dayo (EPN473) shot a few days prior in another location. The suspect was arrested and the little spot fires long since out.
