It sure seemed like the “dark” label had been decided well in advance of the speech actually being delivered.
I heard Trump say that he would make us great, make us prosperous, make us respected. He would bring back jobs, we would make great deals, he would clean up government, and give us law and order.
And the media called this a “dark” vision.
The label makes no sense at all. But — for some very curious reason — 100% of the news outlets all decided that “dark” was the perfect description.

The MSM and liberals are out of ammo; they are down to subjective pejoratives and neurolinguistic programming of liberal alpha-female leaders of liberal female rat packs.
“dark” is the “gravitas” of the Geo W campaign. Why can’t they send out a couple of memos— one that instructs the media to use “dark”, another to use “gloomy” or some such thing. Don’t these folks have a vocabulary or even a Thesaurus?
No reason to guess about this talking points origin. DNC gives talking points to its propaganda wings. Oh I would love another wiki leak on this one.
IIRC, the Clinton campaign blast-mailed out their reaction to the speech beforehand that used the term “dark”
Who stole that line from whom, I should wonder.
This just convinces the electorate even more that Trump’s long-standing contention is correct -— that the mainstream media is merely a propaganda arm of the Dem party. It inadvertently helps him while simultaneously pounds one more nail into the MSM’s coffin.
