France will send artillery to Iraq and its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to assist the US-led coalition’s efforts in Syria and Iraq in the coming months, but will not deploy its troops in these countries, French President Francois Hollande said Friday.

France will also send artillery to Iraq in August to help the Iraqi army fight Daesh terrorists, the President added.

"The Defense Council and I made a decision this morning to provide Iraqi forces with artillery as a part of anti-Daesh efforts. The artillery will be delivered in August," Hollande said. The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be sent to the region in September, the President added.

Well, if it’s posturing it looks like the Russians are taking notice. But then, Russia should have a carrier or two of its own. Right?

“In 2015, the French aircraft carrier was deployed to the Persian Gulf to back military operations against Daesh terrorists. In spring of 2016 it returned to Toulon in southern France, where it underwent technical maintenance.”

Looks like it was really successful last time. /s

WTH does sending an aircraft carrier in a couple of months do?
............................................................

FYI...........This will be the THIRD deployment of the Nuclear Charles de Gaulle. It was sent to the Gulf in September, 2014,on extended assignment then back in November 23rd, 2015 to March 2016, and will return soon to the fight against Isis. During 2 1/2 months the de Gaulle replaced US Carrier Operations and in December 2015 became the flagship of U.S. Naval Operations Forces Central Command Task Force 50. It was the FIRST TIME a non US ship has been so designated. It led the Operation Inherent Resolve Naval Strike Forces against Isis in Iraq and Syria.

France Sending Carrier Charles de Gaulle Back to ISIS Fight Later This Year

The French carrier Charles de Gaulle (R91) will re-deploy later this year to continue strikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday.

“The battle group, which includes the Charles de Gaulle, will again be deployed to Operation Chammal… because we have to strike back at those who attacked us here in January and November 2015,” Hollande said in a speech in commemoration of Bastille Day, according to Reuters.

The deployment would be the third for the carrier as part of the French Operation Chammal, which began in September 2014.

In its last deployment, the 35,000-ton de Gaulle began airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria on November 23 from the Eastern Mediterranean and continued until March. The carrier was the primary naval strike platform for coalition forces during a two and a half month lull in U.S. carrier operations.

In December, de Gaulle became the flagship of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command Task Force 50 that leads the Operation Inherent Resolve naval strike forces – the first for a non-U.S. ship.

“To achieve that level of interoperability, true integration, to the point where Charles de Gaulle Strike Group could take command of Task Force 50 – the first time ever that a non-U.S. element has taken command of a task force – is just so indicative of the partnership we share, and the ability to perform at the very highest levels of warfare, and that’s exactly what you did,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said last month during a presentation of a Meritorious Unit Commendation to the de Gaulle battle group.

During the period, “the strike group executed 271 combat sorties, including 259 precision strikes that significantly degraded ISIL operations in Iraq,” read the citation.

The carrier’s first deployment as part of the collation ISIS strikes came only a few weeks after the deadly attacks in Paris on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in early 2015.

FRANCE is our OLDEST and most loyal Ally. Time to give credit where credit is due.

If all they’re going to commit is air attacks and artillery, and no ground commitment then it’s a half ass effort, yes.

Again, why don’t you ask our troops what a “half-assed” effort is, General?

Listen, France has had numerous attacks against its people and a serious Jihadist problem. If all it is going to do is commit the resources from one aircraft carrier then it’s fight is limited.

In Afghanistan the French actually deployed thousands of troops and personel in ground support. They had an incident in 2012 where some french troops were killed which eventually led to the removal of all ground personel. All they have is logistics.

You think they are all in? I guess you are a general.

Hmm . . let me review my comments to see what led you to believe that I think the French are "all in."

Nope, nothing there.

I didn’t know all that.
Thanks for your very informative post.
Yes, there’s a lot wrong with France’s Establishment, but credit where credit is due to the French military in this case.
