The Left in Fever Pitch After RNC

As for the notion that Reagan's rhetoric was purely positive and aspirational — here's a line from his speech at the 1980 convention: "Back in 1976, [Jimmy] Carter said, 'Trust me.' And a lot of people did. Now, many of those people are out of work. Many have seen their savings eaten away by inflation. Many others on fixed incomes, especially the elderly, have watched helplessly as the cruel tax of inflation wasted away their purchasing power. And, today, a great many who trusted Mr. Carter wonder if we can survive the Carter policies of national defense."

One other point: The fact that so many commentators felt that Trump's speech was too dark is simply a sign of how out-of-touch folks inside the Beltway really are. For more than 10 years, Americans have been saying that the country is on the wrong track. And the press just ignored them. Consider this from a writer at uber-liberal Salon, which seemed to have a sudden epiphany about the power of Trump's message: "From the ashen, haunted faces around me in the press gallery, and the conversations over hastily guzzled drinks before and after, I feel sure I wasn't the only person here who felt as if he were suffering from PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder], sunstroke, and a stomach virus, all at the same time. Still, it was an educational bout with the existential flu.

Anybody who still thought Donald Trump was a joke and a dumbass who would humiliate himself and his party go down to Mondale-scale defeat now knows better. You can pick Trump's speech apart and examine its flaws, of course, but from the point of view of performance and dynamics only one verdict is possible. He killed it. He. Killed. It."

I recently re-watched Reagan speech...It was “Dark” too because he was pointing out the ways in which Carter was destroying the country!

Great post. Very informative.

Truth is always called “darkness”, in some quarters. Nice to remind us that Reagan was deadly serious in his so many of his speeches, as is TRUMP.

"From the ashen, haunted faces around me in the press gallery, and the conversations over hastily guzzled drinks before and after, I feel sure I wasn't the only person here who felt as if he were suffering from PTSD . . .

I applaud the Salon writer's smooth use of the first-person singular and matching verb ("as if he were . . ."), and even more that the verb is correctly put in the subjunctive mode, since "if" makes it a conditional clause. He must have gone to good schools. But . . . are all the press so utterly jihad-partisan-in-the-tank for the Democrats that a good speech made them pale?

Are there no more reporters? Just flacks?

Another similarity with Reagan and Trump is the Butthurt bushes with an axe to grind against them.

I think it is safe to say that if the bushes are butthurt something good has happened.

. . . Ooops. Third-person singular. But you get it. It was a well-tuned sentence.

Laura's speech at the convention was outstanding.

Unfortunately, I think only C-SPAN covered it.

Death rattle from the left and establishment status quo leeches.

Keep to current news from credible sources. Ignore Op Eds from questionable Patriots, regurgitating news with their spin.

Nothing about this election cycle is status quo. Never been seen before! Not even with Reagan.

many commentators felt that Trump’s speech was too dark, numerous terrorists attacks here in the US and police shootings, yeah that makes me feel confident, secure and rosey inside

The last of the objective MSM reporters left the building around the same time as Elvis. Of all the talking heads today, it seems to me that maybe Dobbs and Stuart Varney are what remain of the kool-aid free. I like that dude from Capitalist Pigs too, what his name? Jonathon something.

I am alternating between Laura, Fred Dicker and Herman Cain for my morning radio fix. Great broadcasters all. Glenn blew it.
