California Gov. Jerry Brown denied parole for the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson who is serving a life sentence for killing a wealthy grocer and his wife more than 40 years ago.
Brown overturned the recommendation of a parole board on Friday that found Leslie Van Houten was no-longer the violent young woman who committed a gruesome murder and was now fit for release.
She has completed college degrees and been a model inmate.
The Democratic governor acknowledged her success in prison and her youth at the time of the murders.
However, he wrote in his decision that she failed to explain how she transformed from an upstanding teen to a killer.

I always think the reason these prisoners are so cooperative is because they know that if they act out, they'll get a smack-down quick and it's the fear of sure punishment that keeps them in line.

No student loan worries for her. Education paid for by law abiding citizens and for what purpose? She is going to die in prison, as she should. Life in prison should mean, life in prison.
Not that I want to see them released, but the only reason this happened is because they are white.
I’m ticked with that too; they should learn trades and work to pay expenses, not get a good degree on the back of the taxpayer.

Blame Cali Supreme Court Chief Justice Rose Bird. The prosecutors, juries, and judges involved in the Manson trials all did their jobs. They were nullified by a lone individual who 'felt' the death penalty was 'wrong'. I am sure Leo and Rosemary LoBianco 'appreciated' Bird's gesture, although they could not demonstrate the appreciation, due to the fact that they, themselves had an arbitrary 'death penalty' imposed upon themselves, extra-judicially, by Van Houten...

In California it would have been the gas chamber and I am still mystified as to why they didn’t get shoved into the chamber within a month of their conviction. With this kind of proof of guilt, the savagery, no need to wait long.
I always view their lucky escape from the death chamber as a result of the state not wanting to do their hard duty. They LOVE the perks and fun, but loathe doing the dirty work.
At this point she and the other Manson followers are political prisoners.

Jerry really has lost his mind, While denying her Parole, he is ACTIVELY RELEASING Thousands of YOUNG Hard Core, Violent Criminals.
Maybe he doesn’t think she is capable of terrorizing the Citizenry because she is so Old.
One of the very few times (I can’t think of another) that I will praise Jerry Brown, and the parole board should be ashamed over it’s lack of judgment. I don’t care if this criminal has been a “model prisoner” - she stabbed a woman 16 times. She should never be free again in the rest of her miserable life.
I agree; I don’t know what this person could contribute to society that merits exposing the general public to the threat of her on the loose. Let her put her college degrees to work behind bars...

You know, this situation supports my view of nature over nurture. A lot of kids who come from bad places basically turn out right, while kids like Leslie come from good backgrounds loaded with opportunities become a murderer. It was already embedded in Leslie to hurt people, anyone.
