The police shooting of an African-American caregiver, who was lying in the street trying to help an autism patient, was accidental, according to the local police union representing the North Miami officer.

The officer had intended to shoot the patient, whom he thought posed a danger, but accidentally shot the caregiver instead, said John Rivera, the President of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.

????????????????????????????????? Officers are supposed to assess the situation before doing anything, how long did this officer assess the situation, all he had to do was ask a few questions to KNOW FOR SURE what was going on.

Glad to know he was aiming at the OTHER unarmed person on the street.

I'm not saying at all that this was a good shoot, but let's clear up something: a person doesn't have to be visibly "armed" to pose a threat to other people, even police. A displayed assaultive intent ratchets up the justification to defend with deadly force dramatically. After all, Trayvon Martin was "unarmed" when he attacked Zimmerman, but was rightfully shot anyway.

I'd like to know more about this case before assigning blame.

Put the cop on the no gun, no shoot list.

The media has not helped in ANY of the shooting situations. Always playing judge, jury and executioner.

From what I have seen of this case, this officer is going to have to be charged.

You don’t get to shoot people for no reason.

A mistake is not a reason.

I’m very pro-police, but if circumstances do not justify a shooting, then you gotta pay the price just like everyone else.

Exactly. Sure looks like the cop is telling a tall tale. We must be missing part of the video.

So, the cop took three shots at human sized non-moving targets from close range. Two missed entirely and one hit the wrong guy? And this dude is competent to carry a firearm? (I don’t believe the cover story, by the way)

Take the cop’s gun away and put him on desk duty at the very least. What a dolt.

That doesn’t make it any better.

No, but it does make a certain amount of sense. If a right handed shooter had a weak grip on the gun, pressing the trigger would have sent the round low and to the left. I suspect Mr Kinsey has a bullet wound in his left tukus.

Just the same, why did he not confirm that the person he was shooting at was carrying a firearm and not a toy truck before he decided to fire? I go back to what I said yesterday - the officer should probably consider a career in retail security.

I'd add that maybe North Miami PD should consider training their officers in how to deal with the mentally ill and mentally handicapped. We had a shooting of a mentally ill, non-compliant, man several years ago. The department instituted training and the problem has not recurred.

So why did he handcuff the guy that was shot if he wasn’t shooting at him ?

To maximize the potential for a bleed out. It's just SOP. Reduces lawsuits, a cost-saving measure to protect taxpayer funds. Good optics, too - if you shoot a guy and then cuff him, he looks like he should have been shot. Also, defense experts have proven that shot people are still lethal within a twenty foot radius, and that they can kill you faster than you can draw your weapon in self defense. Fact. Better safe than sorry, anyway. And why do you want to know? Show me some ID, and keep your hands away from that toy truck.

“Cop shoots 3 times. Misses target and hits wrong guy once. Not only that, but he feels the need to shoot at someone playing with a toy truck.”

So many questions. Why is a mentally challenged “patient” in the middle of the road.

Also, sounds like the officer needs more range time. If he survives the lynching, that is.

The officer had intended to shoot the patient, whom he thought posed a danger, but accidentally shot the caregiver instead...

LOL!
So not only poor judgment, but a bad shot as well. At least he didn't hit the widow in the window across the street.
I guess there was no good explanation (shooting someone while he is laying on the ground with his hands up in the air), so this is the best they could come up with.
They should have gone the PTSD route and said that he was having flashbacks of his days in 'Nam, and thought he saw Charlie running across the street at him... Either that, or he ate a bad mushroom that morning.

Praise the Lord that no one got killed (although the guy who got shot in the leg has reasons to be pissed off).

A danger to himself, I assume, so he had to be put down.
