Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and former psychiatrist–in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital, who has studied sexuality for 40 years, said it is a scientific fact that “there is no gay gene.”
“Environment,” however, “is very important,” said Dr. McHugh, author of The Mind Has Mountains: Reflections on Society and Psychiatry. He also explained that the permissive sexual culture in the United States today has confused “desire” with “love,” and that homosexuality is a false or “erroneous desire.”
In an interview with Virtue Online: The Voice for Global Orthodox Anglicanism, reporter Lydia Evans asked Dr. McHugh, “How do you view the popular assumption that science has somehow proven that sexual orientation is determined early in childhood, if not before birth?”
Dr. McHugh, who ended the sexual reassignment surgery program at Johns Hopkins because it was not helping the patients, answered, “Well, as I have said, there is no gay gene. And there are factors more influential than biology.”
“The best data, of course, [comes from the Framingham Study],” said Dr. McHugh. “If you are a man and you grow up in a rural environment, you are four times less likely to have homosexual relationships than if you grow up in a metropolitan area. That's not left-handedness.”
“If you are a lesbian, you are much more likely to be college-educated,” he said. “That's not something that happens at conception.”
“My point is that we now know that the environment is very important,” said Dr. McHugh.
Lydia Evans then asked, “On another front, as the sexuality debate within mainline churches seems to have shifted so profoundly in favor of the left, how do you see the debates of the broader culture changing in the next five to ten years?”
Dr. McHugh said, “It really is amazing -- I mean, 50 years ago [homosexual behavior] was a crime, and now we're talking about [same-sex marriage]. Anyone who wants to stick with the tradition is accused of being a biblical literalist or a homophobic racist, because, in part, of the more fundamental change in our society towards permissiveness, that is, easy divorce, cohabitation and concubinage, abortion, pornography ... and euthanasia.”
“The issue of the homosexual is not separate,” he said. “It's all part and parcel of the pandemonium that the permissive movement has brought. We have just licensed all kinds of behavior."
When asked about earlier generations being pressured to marry and have families, Dr. McHugh said these were societal expectations and they were positive.
“Yes, and they were good ones,” he said, “and biblically based, and part and parcel of my commitment to really what amounts to loving relationships.”
“You see, what has happened with the permissive movement is that it has picked up the Freudian confusion of desire and love, making them the same,” said Dr. McHugh. “And with the implication, for example, that I must desire my mother. I don't desire my mother. I love my mother.”
He continued, “Now the fact is that in my marriage, of course, I desired this woman and I felt love for her. Now, 50 years into marriage with her, I still desire her, but now I love her. She's irreplaceable. There is this thing that has come and it's different. This person exists for me as irreplaceable. So, there is this confusion of desire and love. [Homosexuality] is erroneous desire.”
When Lydia Evans asked about how the environment of a church, or religious-minded community, could affect people’s behavior, Dr. McHugh said, “This is the point. You've got to get the churches -- not just the Anglican churches, but the Roman Catholics and the Presbyterians.”
“They've got to start talking again about their foundational opinions,” he said. “There's an idea of there being different kinds of laws in our world: the natural law, the law of desire -- but there is scriptural law that comes out of the Old Testament. And they've got to get all of this straight.”

Suppose the jihadi in Florida had killed 49 people in a strip club? Or at an orgy? Would we be saying “America stands with you, fornicators!” Or “America stands with you, adulterers!” Or “ America stands with you, pornographers!” No.
But this special perversion of homosexuality! It gets a special mention, like those who practice such are a special class of oppressed innocents.
I don't want those who sexually sin murdered! I have sinned, I know that! I just don't want sexual sin KAUDED as some sort of NOBLE THING.

Homosexuality is a mental disorder. I know a very attractive and very sweet woman who was a lesbian for a long time due to a traumatic experience with a man. After so many years it never produced the happiness she believed it would create. After much soul-searching, she abandoned the lifestyle and straightened herself out (no pun intended). She is now happily married to a great guy and is the proud mother of two children.
She lost a lot of friends in the LGBT community when she renounced the lifestyle, but that has not stopped her in trying to help others to do the same and find true happiness with someone of the opposite sex.

Exactly. Most “lesbians” were married to men and have kids. And a lot go right back to the man the minute the lesbian partner starts beating them up. It’s a mental disorder and they have no self-esteem.
Most homosexual men I have known didn’t have a father or if they had one he didn’t do anything with them and certainly didn’t show them how to be a man. Most grow up dominated by their mother. Mental disorders. No such thing as homosexual gene. It’s nurture not nature.
Who cares! We have bigger issues......

I travel around the US for work, and everywhere I go I see the skinny little boys with the same clothes and mannerisms. Waving their hands and talking in the little sing song voice. And do t forget the obligatory “born this way” tattoo.
And how many butch lesbos have you seen wearing the jeans with boots, and always a flannel shirt, and a biker wallet with chain. Like watching that tv show “Big Bang”, they are imitating a TV character. Play acting.
I don’t think a genetic tendency would make you buy a certain wardrobe and speak in mimicking manners. How would it know??
The genetic science is correct.
While human homosexuality has existed for thousands of years, after all of the rhetoric and deliberate misguidance, within science, there is simply NO GENETIC MUTATION OR CAUSATION FOR IT. THERE IS ONLY FORCED BEHAVIOR OR BEHAVIORAL CHOICE!
On April 14, 2003, the Human Genome Project was completed. The announcement was proclaimed!
“The human genome is complete and the Human Genome Project is over” (see “Human Genome Report...,” 2003, emp. added).
Within this report: “... neither the map for the X nor the Y chromosome contains any “gay gene.” (Brad Harrub, Ph.D. and Bert Thompson, Ph.D. and Dave Miller, Ph.D)
In another report from a very left wing publication:
“Scientists tested the DNA of 400 gay men... The genes were neither sufficient, nor necessary, to make any of the men gay.” (Guardian UK)
The only true science then becomes behavioral causality, period!
It was “Sigmund Freud who first postulated that parental relationships with a child ultimately determine the youngster’s sexual orientation.”
In other words, as there is no genetic causation, homosexuality and all other non-heterosexual relationships are learned by or forced upon individuals, often children!
“Sixty-eight percent [68% of more than 900 studied] of the present homosexual male participants... did not identify as homosexual until after the molestation.”
“Of homosexual women who were molested, 62% were molested before self-identification as a homosexual woman...”
So yes, as much as I pretty much hate Freud, he appears to be correct, homosexuality is “learned.”
Additionally, it does not always happen to children by a long shot. And, sometimes, other reasons are revealed!
Over the years, I have personally known several “gay” men, who later, with nearly identical stories, explained that as adults, they had become “hooked” on pornography and then, in the concise version, simply decided they were no longer satisfied with the wives they had married and were aroused by ever increasing sexual fantasy, until they came to the place where they decided to have sex with men, and even animals!
In one instance, while literally moments from his last on this earth, one man told his wife he was sorry, asked forgiveness, and said it was the most horrific and selfish decision he could have ever made, for his beautiful wife and son, and for himself. He died very painfully moments later as a result of AIDS.
As we humans in general possess the propensity or desire to be our own boss, not be told what to do, occasionally break the rules, and often seek greater self gratification, sexual perversion then becomes a deliberate choice or forcible crime, as in forced sodomy of children and adults.
A true Conservative must care, if they love their freedom and country!
Nearly every one of our first 11 Constitutional Amendments are now being destroyed by the hostile and hyper proactive left wing cultural agenda!
Historically, and to date, the end of this “cultural war” is to turn society against God and those who are Christians.
This is the ultimate objective!
Naturally, the end of any society which rejects morality is the end of the same society.
Individual freedom itself, cannot exist in a society which has rejected morality!
This is already rapidly what is taking place across much of our society and their elected officials.
As the morality of American society is already spiraling down, the larger and louder the opposition to God, morality, and Christians is becoming!
As this is already happening, our elected officials are also becoming more anti-God and more antagonistic and hostile toward the morality and natural traditional family and the very Christianity which was espoused by those voters and elected officials who fought for and crafted our country and Constitution. The lack of morality is why our government has become so corrupt! The lack of morality in society is also why our government is out of control and grabbing more and more control of everything in society!
The more immoral we become, the less individually responsible and corrupt we are becoming!
It is now rapidly becoming normal across America for those who have a conviction against sodomy to be lined up for ridicule and hated. Today, MOST of the entertainment world, media, and press are highly antagonistic of Christians and morality. They mock and laugh at morality and those who espouse it!
As sodomy and all forms of perversion are becoming acceptable and legal, these practices are being heralded from the highest courts in America as civil rights (minority rights), and thus it is now “HATE SPEECH” to disagree.
There are dozens of court cases pending now across America, where “homosexual couples” appear to have targeted and are suing those who have convictions against it.
It is now going so far as corporations are now investigating social media to ascertain if their employee’s are against homosexuality. A number of high profile individuals of large corporations have already been fired this way.
There are now (I believe) 7 cases where employee’s or potential employee’s have been fired or intentionally screened out, after the employers decided to find out what their churches positions were, as some churches have not compromised their convictions on homosexuality.
In another very recent case, there is even an attempt to shut down a church, based on “hate crimes” speech, as they were teaching homosexuality is a wrong behavior (not genetic), and is “caused” or “learned.”
The funny part, or the not so funny part, is that the HGP was completed in April of 2003, and it was discovered there was no “gay gene” within genetic science. This means there is only behavioral causation.
Ironically, Freud (who I greatly dislike) taught that all homosexuality was “learned,” and “taught by parents.”
If you don’t think “gays” are a threat to Christianity and freedom, think again...
Hitler, Goebbels, and Ernst (the man who helped Hitler obtain power) of the National Socialist Party of Germany were all gay!
And they sought to recruit “gay” soldiers, as they would not be bound by moral boundaries.
This is also very much in line with their strong core humanistic beliefs, and why they sought out and murdered millions of Lutheran civilians across Germany, and acted to create fear and silence within the Catholic Church.
Oh, and by the way, they were also socialist!
