Melania Trump’s Speech Bears Striking Similarities to Michelle Obama’s 2008 Address
NY Times ^ | 7/19/2016 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Mrs. Trump, Monday night:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Mrs. Obama, in her 2008 speech:

“Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

I hope the Trump team reads your post. That would help things. But seriously to have a “team” of people writing such an important speech (as in the introduction of Melania to the public) begs the importance of fact checking. It didn’t take a team to come up with words so close. Some “one” person did it in my opinion.

ROFL

Classic Trump!

He just grabbed the news cycle for another 24-48 hours and got millions to listen to a speech they would have skipped before!

Trump lives 24-7 in the head of the media and liberals.

The liberals think they GOT HIM this time ! ROFL!

They don’t realize that he just trolled them again for more free publicity !

Maybe English is her fifth language

She speaks English, French, German, Serbian, and Slovenian (her first language). That's four more than I speak!

Good point, the Trump campaign should immediately adopt the postion that at least Melania never said what Michelle Obama said in 2008:

"For the first time in my adult lifetime I am proud of my country"

(Michelle Obama, in speeches in both Madison and Milwaukee, Feb. 18, 2008)

Bring that up every time the MSM reporters ask about the speech issue, and they will soon give up.

I don’t think you should blame her. The campaign released a statement saying that a team of speech writers were involved in the speech.

thanks! I’m virtually lolling at the rest of the commentary debating how this could hurt Trump and wondering if there’s a mole in the operation.

Nothing Trump does is by accident...

I read through to reply 120 and am now skipping to the end.

I know what this is. It’s not a mole in the Trump camp. It’s the type of borrowing that people do under pressure and their main fault is that they don’t think anyone will notice. Students do it all the time, and the professor picks right up on it and gives them an F. Some are so dumb they do it from Wikipedia and think no one will notice. That’s all it is. An inexperienced and not very bright and not very talented or inspired speechwriter.

I think the whole thing is meaningless because it happens so often. You would think a presidential candidate would have better speechwriters but I guess not.

The sad thing is that they didn’t trust Melania to write her own speech completely, without any help. It would have be a knockout!

It’s disturbing that some FReepers have zero integrity and defend their guy right or wrong. Glad you understand how STUPID this obvious plagiarism was. We would annihilate Hillary if she did this. And rightly so. Inexcusable.

I completely agree it is too similar to be coincidental. It was either a copy of part of Michelle's speech or they were both a copy of something else.

Did some googling for what else it might be and so far have not found it.

Assuming there is no third source, then the speech writer copied Michelle's speech.

I am not sure exactly how much blame is appropriate to pass onto Melania about it though. Seems to me that speech writers are supposed to be professionals who can be trusted not to do this kind of crap.

As for annihilating Hillary over something like this, I am sure there would be some comments about it if she had said, say something similar to Nancy Reagan or some such...but seriously, we are talking about something tacky, not something seriously evil. Hillary has done and said things that are seriously evil, and the comparison is absurd. When Mlelania Trump decides to sign an afadavit falsely testifying that she is aware that an innocent child brutally raped had a fantasies about older men....then we can compare her to Hillary. Please not before. Its kinda of disgusting to think there is any comparison.

Adding that I don’t think anyone did it intentionally for any reason. I don’t think Trump or anyone else was trying to make some obscure point. It was just poor speechwriting.

About 8-10 lines of the speech. Someone on Twitter posted a couple other lines. The speech writers, which the campaign admits helped, need to explain themselves.
