Just the amount of power they wield.

In the 30’s the only two real choices in Germany was the Nazi’s and the Communists. I figured after that experience, there would be a sizable Libertarian party in Germany. However it seems most Germans still support big government. I don’t understand it.

So what’s new? Communists have always been anti-Semitic. Stalin made sure of that.

And the East German Stasi and GDR government was loaded with Gestapo and SS high ranking officers, including Cabinet Minister Ernest Grossmann, the Deputy Commandant of Sachsenhausen slave labor/concentration camp. A lot of the Stasi were former Gestapo officers and SS soldiers.

Nothing changes, only that the Swastika has been bent into the Hammer and Sickle (Try it. It works).

Goes back to Bismarck, who instituted the kind of welfare state that liberals have copied in modern times, all the way back in 1880; but he got his version through the parliament by calling it “practical Christianity”.

The antisemitism goes back further than Stalin.
“What is the secular basis of Judaism? Practical needs; egoism. What is the secular cult of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his secular God? Money.”

Karl Marx, “On ‘The Jewish Question’”, 1844
So any time we hear about the left in any capacity, this automatically goes along with it.

This kind of hatred is part of the left’s permanent doctrine.

Yes, how queer that today's leftists STILL sound like Marx and the Nazis.

You want anti-Semitism?

Look at Hillary and her supporters.

Absolutely pure anti-Jew.

It isn't any secret that Hillary hates Jews.

Hayek described what you are outlining in the 1940s:

Although our modern socialists’ promise of greater freedom is genuine and sincere, in recent years observer after observer has been impressed by the unforeseen consequences of socialism, the extraordinary similarity in many respects of the conditions under “communism” and “fascism.” As the writer Peter Drucker expressed it in 1939, “the complete collapse of the belief in the attainability of freedom and equality through Marxism has forced Russia to travel the same road toward a totalitarian society of un-freedom and inequality which Germany has been following. Not that communism and fascism are essentially the same. Fascism is the stage reached after communism has proved an illusion, and it has proved as much an illusion in Russia as in pre-Hitler Germany.”

No less significant is the intellectual outlook of the rank and file in the communist and fascist movements in Germany before 1933. The relative ease with which a young communist could be converted into a Nazi or vice versa was well known, best of all to the propagandists of the two parties. The communists and Nazis clashed more frequently with each other than with other parties simply because they competed for the same type of mind and reserved for each other the hatred of the heretic. Their practice showed how closely they are related. To both, the real enemy, the man with whom they had nothing in common, was the liberal of the old type. While to the Nazi the communist and to the communist the Nazi, and to both the socialist, are potential recruits made of the right timber, they both know that there can be no compromise between them and those who really believe in individual freedom.

— F.A. Hayek, The Road to Serfdom

Thanks for posting old Karl’s quote. Saw it last week, possibly at another FR post (your’s?). Marx, as a German, actually provided Hitler with an ideological justification for his Nazi anti-Semitism theology.

That is one reason we say that Fascism/Nazism and Communism/Marxism are twin brothers of the same mother.

Yes.

I've NEVER understood how the right wing and left wing somehow form a "circle" that eventually meets at some point.

Nope.

It's pretty much a straight line between total freedom (anarchy/libertarianism) and complete State control (leftism/socialism/Naziism).

There has never been a "circle".
