Military coup underway in Turkey

ISTANBUL – Turkey's military announced on Friday night that the army had taken over “the entire management of the country to restore rule of law” as the country's prime minister admitted an “attempt” by a group within the military while falling short of calling the attempt a military coup.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking by cell phone to CNN Turk from an unknown location, vowed that Turkey would "overcome this invasion" and called on Turks to "gather in squares and see what this minority can do with their tanks and artillery against the people."

"Throughout history those who make coups have been unsuccessful, and I absolutely believe that these will be unsuccessful as well," Erdogan said, adding that the architects of the takeover attempt "will absolutely pay the price for this in heaviest manner."

“And he will be sent to meet his 1 72 year old virgin.”

Not to nitpick, but I think it’s 72 1 yr old virgins.

Fish or cut bait! They figured that if they had to hang that they would do it together as opposed to hanging separately.

Good news. Better news if Erdogan was found floating face down somewhere in the Bosporous.

I have a friend from Turkey, on a business trip to Germany, who has sent photos of people in the streets , standing on tanks, arm raised, hand in a fist. I don’t know how to interpret it, are they pro or against the military. Unfortunately he writes in Turkish which I don’t understand.

Isn’t one part of Turkey in Europe and the other part in Asia?

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk; (19 May 1881 - 10 November 1938) was a Turkish army officer, reformist statesman, and the first President of Turkey. He is credited with being the founder of the Republic of Turkey. His surname, Ataturk (meaning “Father of the Turks”), was granted to him in 1934 and forbidden to any other person by the Turkish parliament.

Ataturk was a military officer during World War I. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, he led the Turkish National Movement in the Turkish War of Independence. Having established a provisional government in Ankara, he defeated the forces sent by the Allies. His military campaigns led to victory in the Turkish War of Independence. Ataturk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, secular, and democratic nation-state. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights, while the burden of taxation on peasants was reduced. The principles of Ataturk’s reforms, upon which modern Turkey was established, are referred to as Kemalism.

Erdogan has been chipping away at the Turkey Ataturk founded. Women are “encouraged” to cover their heads and abandon secular dress. He wants another Iran with Muslim restraints on the population. The military wants none of it.
I support the Military in this coup. Erdogan must go.

Yes, it is physically in Europe and in Asia. We (Bush and Obama) tried to arm-twist EU into admitting Turkey. What a disaster that would be with open borders!

I don’t know if the Military takeover is necessarily bad, given the civilian government’s relationship with ISIS and militancy.

But their military has always been overshadowing their “civilian” government, since Ataturk! Their mandate was to make sure that Turkey stayed secular. That’s why I am not sure if this coup is necessarily bad! Erdovan was certainly moving toward Islamism and away from secularism.

Let’s face it - in it’s own, brave way, Turkey is proving that Islam and democracy are incompatible. If Turkey can’t, I don’t think any other Islamic country can!

Erdogan is probably wishing he had not shot down that Russian plane, and that his son had not sold all that ISIS oil production for those islamist beheaders.

He chose poorly.
