(CNN) Donald Trump has called Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and offered him the vice presidential slot on his ticket, CNN has learned.

Pence has accepted.

The pick sets up a stark clash in styles: a brash presumptive nominee with a tendency to freelance into controversies alongside a cautious former congressional leader who's stuck close to conservative orthodoxy since starting his career in talk radio.

Trump said Thursday evening he's postponing the official announcement, previously set for Friday morning...

I listened to him on his radio program. Very smart with a quick wit.

Newt already said he wouldn’t be Chief of Staff. All the grunt work. Yes, he would be the best Chief of Staff in our Nations history, but he deserves a better position.

:(

Maybe Senior Adviser like Val Jerrit Loser is for Loser Zero. Not sure how that works. Does that mean he will be at the White House for all the meetings? Will he travel with Trump around the country?

If so, will Newt get paid? Will it be an official position? Newt is the type of person that if he is in the room, everyone is asking and waiting to hear but “What does Newt have to say”. He has so much wisdom and experience and because he is a solid conservative and historian, his perspective very much emulates Our Founding Fathers.

Pence has already quit the governor’s race as I understand it so this is as done as it is likely to get. If the election becomes more about terrorism obviously doesn’t make it a perfect fit but that is for the discussion of another day.

Among the likely VP choices, there’s going to be disappointment no matter who Trump picks. It’s too bad Cruz turned out to be such a turd.

As someone explained in another thread the original bill was poorly written and would have never stood up to a court challenge. When I looked the issue up it appears that was a true statement. The problem was the legislature’s inability to get the wording right. If one law like that get overturned by a court it will make all other ones impossible.

You could, I think argue that Pence should have managed the situation better, that he could have been more forceful in his presentation of the legal necessity for the changes. That is a valid reason for preferring someone else. He appears to be a rather vanilla choice that hopefully brings a swing state into the Trump column.

After looking at him I think the charge that “he folded like a paper parasol” to the heterophobic left that has been thrown around here is an overstatement. He is not as firm as he could be but he isn’t as bad as he is being portrayed

BTW I wanted Duncan Hunter so Pence was not my guy so my defense is somewhat 1/2 hearted

Verginius Rufus wrote: "Maybe the selection of Truman as VP in 1944 is comparable...plain Midwesterner on the lower half of the ticket with a charismatic figure on top. Of course FDR was in failing health in 1944 and the Democratic Party insiders knew that he wouldn't survive another 4 years (and didn't want Wallace to become President). Trump appears to be very healthy.

One advantage of Pence is that he will be only 65 after Trump has served 8 years...Gingrich would be 81 after serving 8 years as Vice President so not a plausible candidate in 2024."

Good points, Verginius Rufus. And I might add, Dan Quayle, another Midwesterner and actual Hoosier as an example.

Every time some one goes to see Trump, all the media is in a tail spin, it's got to be this one that is the V.P. pick...

There are other positions in this cabinet that need to be filled, and that could by why Trump is talking to all these people...does he say what he is doing? NO...did he say he was ‘unpredictable’ YES, so when someone comes out with:

OH PENCE IS THE V.P. I don't believe it until I read something that says something that Trump would have remarked on...hence...his own campaign came out and said they haven't made a decision yet...

So don't go trying to put something on me, I am not in the ‘know’ my last name is NOT TRUMP, but I do work for his campaign and have done for a while now, and do know what remarks he makes, and so would others if they listened to Trump and not the MEDIA....

Safe choice. Pence won’t upstage Trump like Newt. No one cares about the VP anyway.

Gov. Pence’s executive experience, as well as his foreign policy saavy, while serving in Washington, will bring a lot to the table.
