Six Tupolev Tu-22M3 strategic bombers have delivered massive airstrikes against a major Islamic State camp and ammunition depots in Syria, Russias Defense Ministry says. The aircraft flew from Russia and returned home after the operation.
The bombers, based at one of Russians southern air bases, took off on Tuesday morning, passed through Iranian and Iraqi airspace and delivered concentrated high-explosive ammunition airstrikes on terrorist targets east of the towns of Palmyra and As Sukhnah, and the village of Arak.
All aircraft have successfully returned to home base, the ministry said in a statement.

I have noticed over the years that there’s something in the Russian soul that in many things they make, they seem to go beyond what’s necessary and give it a finishing touch that lends an artistic flair and a touch of beauty. This plane is a fine example.
The Russian space shuttle, which was a shameless copy of ours, and was barely used at all, had that same exotic flair, similar to the Tupolev.
When they built their crappy, schlocky apartment buildings, and klutzy looking automobiles, they somehow lost that exotic touch, however.

Yes it appears to be a rear armament system.
It is a beautiful plane. Russian design always have had a certain beauty about their designs.

The Russians are getting a lot of practical experience applying their current weapon systems that should enhance design and development of their next ones. They can't afford the next ones.

I can remember when B-52s had rear guns. I think they must have removed them during the 60s.

Back in the olden days when I went to sea on warships in the Pacific, our greatest fear was the Backfire.
Skimming the waves at 600kts it was nearly impossible to pick up and Phalanx wasn't perfect back then.
These birds are big and fast, with 1/2 the payload of a B-52.
And they can fly LOW like the B-1B.
If you don't have excellent air cover, you're a target and likely dead.
Menacing.

"I can remember when B-52s had rear guns. I think they must have removed them during the 60s." I worked on B-52s in the mid seventies.
The latest models, G & H, had a tail gun that was
remotely controlled by the gunner whose position was next to
EW officer on the flight deck. It used some sort of radar
to aim the gun. The gunner was an enlisted guy usually
at least a Staff Sargent in rank.
