Why Gun Control Can’t Be Solved in the USA
dilbert.com ^ | June 22nd, 2016 | Scott Adams

Posted on 07/12/2016 3:59:09 AM PDT by dennisw

On average, Democrats (that’s my team*) use guns for shooting the innocent. We call that crime.

On average, Republicans use guns for sporting purposes and self-defense.

If you don’t believe me, you can check the statistics on the Internet that don’t exist. At least I couldn’t find any that looked credible.

But we do know that race and poverty are correlated. And we know that poverty and crime are correlated. And we know that race and political affiliation are correlated. Therefore, my team (Clinton) is more likely to use guns to shoot innocent people, whereas the other team (Trump) is more likely to use guns for sporting and defense.

That’s a gross generalization. Obviously. Your town might be totally different.

So it seems to me that gun control can’t be solved because Democrats are using guns to kill each other – and want it to stop – whereas Republicans are using guns to defend against Democrats. Psychologically, those are different risk profiles. And you can’t reconcile those interests, except on the margins. For example, both sides might agree that rocket launchers are a step too far. But Democrats are unlikely to talk Republicans out of gun ownership because it comes off as “Put down your gun so I can shoot you.”

Let’s all take a deep breath and shake off the mental discomfort I just induced in half of my readers. You can quibble with my unsupported assumptions about gun use, but keep in mind that my point is about psychology and about big group averages. If Republicans think they need guns to protect against Democrats, that’s their reality. And if Democrats believe guns make the world more dangerous for themselves, that is their reality. And they can both be right. Your risk profile is different from mine.

So let’s stop acting as if there is something like “common sense” gun control to be had if we all act reasonably. That’s not an option in this case because we all have different risk profiles when it comes to guns. My gun probably makes me safer, but perhaps yours makes you less safe. You can’t reconcile those interests.

Our situation in the United States is that people with different risk profiles are voting for their self-interests as they see it. There is no compromise to be had in this situation unless you brainwash one side or the other to see their self-interest differently. And I don’t see anyone with persuasion skills trying to do that on either side.

Gun control should not even be a topic in this country. The Founders instituted the Bill of Rights to protect the citizens FROM the government. To have the government “regulate” those freedoms defeats the whole purpose.

We must never loose sight of why the 2nd Amendment exists. It long predated the current political Parties. (in spite of ComDem claims of their political ancestry)

The 2nd Amendment is about citizens being armed as the last resort to an oppressive Government. The Declaration of Independence is more clear than the Constitution in making that point clear.

Needs repeating !!

The entire premise is false....... There is nothing that needs to be solved. Gun control is a manufactured problem used by freedom haters to infringe upon our rights. The only “solution” the lefties have is confiscation.

It is the people that can no longer be reconciled. We have a nation that half it's citizens (leftists) want to control the lives of the other half.

Actually no. I'm not terribly worried about a thug shooting me. I am very concerned about a government disarming and subjugating me. (well, trying to anyway, neither one of us is going to like it)

My firearms are for fun and for self defense. I don't bother hunting as I've proven to myself I'm not particularly good at it. That personal defense role though is two fold.

On the one hand, yes I carry everywhere I legally can. There is a loaded 9mm on the desk in front of me as I type this - just in case. I understand the statistics and realize I am (thankfully) extremely unlikely to ever need a firearm in that role. However, if I do need it, I will need it badly. I also carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in my car, have smoke and CO detectors, etc. etc. All things I hope to never need/use, but have because they are relatively cheap insurance against unlikely but serious consequences.

The other personal defense role for my firearms is at a more macro level. That role is typified by my AR-15. As I said, I don't hunt, and I don't carry the AR for defense. I own it though for defense against a government that might want to take it away from me. I own it because so many would-be tyrants (aka "liberals") at all levels of government and MSM don't want me to have it. Childish? No, deadly serious. Childish would be me owning it just because others say I cannot or should not. Deadly serious is me owning it because of the reasons others do not want me to own it. I own it to keep those thoughts and dreams of power and conquest at bay.

I bought a Colt model year 1918 reintroduction replica from Colt a few years ago (after the S&W) for $1k and put another $750 into the action. I've since bought a Dan Wesson Valor.

This is by far my favorite 1911 in .45.

A disarmed population is easier to control. That is why the Koran forbade non-Muslims from owning any type of weapon.

No, they don't.

As usual Scott Adams misses the point. They don't want it to stop. They like being the people with guns. They just don't want anyone capable of shooting back.

When I look at that picture I can’t help but think he’s wishing that he hadn’t left the .45 in the car.

Anarcho-tyranny when the powers that be go after the law abiding producers, the taxpayers, the boring middle class and their families. All while encouraging the lumpen to remain lumpen and turn into gun carrying criminals.
The responsible bourgeoisie are a target as large as the broadside of a barn.
