Gun Control Won’t Fix Chicago
Wall Street Journal ^ | 7/5/2016 | Jason L Riley

Posted on 07/06/2016 4:29:39 AM PDT by simpson96

Three children—ages 5, 7 and 11—were among the 64 shooting victims in Chicago over Independence Day weekend. That’s a handful fewer than the 69 people shot there over Memorial Day weekend but it is well above the 55 people shot over Fourth of July weekend in 2015.

Chicago’s warm-weather mayhem is as constant as it is concentrated. Nearly all of this gun violence takes place in black and brown neighborhoods on the city’s south and west sides. A resident of North Lawndale—which recorded 82 violent crimes, including homicide and sexual assault, between May 21 and June 20—told the Chicago Tribune that celebrating outdoors with family requires constant vigilance.

“You have to know the difference between fireworks and gunshots,” she said. “The kids can’t enjoy themselves like they should be able to. You’re constantly paranoid.” Another resident dressed her 6-year-old daughter in bright colors so that she could be identified quickly in case of an emergency.

A third resident told the paper, “If you sit here 30 more minutes, you’ll hear gunshots.” He added: “You don’t want the kids to get too comfortable because you don’t know when you’re gonna have to rush them into the house.” But even staying indoors doesn’t guarantee safety. On Monday, a woman inside a house was struck in the chest by a bullet shot through a window.

Through June, there had already been 315 homicides in Chicago this year, which is a 49% increase over the first half of last year. Though violent crime isn’t at these levels in most other places, it has worsened in recent years. Homicides in the nation’s largest cities were up 9% through March of this year. They increased by 17% between 2014 and 2015.

Decade after decade, it keeps getting worse, and the Chi-town voters keep on voting (D).

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

“Well the south side of Chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a man name of Leroy Brown”

Some things never change.

I can’t understand why the law of diminishing returns hasn’t kicked in.

at some point the number of murders should begin to diminish because a substantial portion of murders has been murdered.

I’m beyond caring about this. If they want the violence to stop they need to rise up and make it happen, but they won’t. It’s the same in every African s#!thole. It’s always someone else’s problem to fix, they’re incapable of a workable social order no matter how many “community organizers” there are.

The cure for urban jungles is gentrification. But black leaders don’t want to hear that and push back on it. Here in NYC, parts of Brooklyn and Queens that were war zones a few decades ago are teeming with funky coffee shops, gourmet grocery stores and eclectic restaurants. Pretty diverse mix of residents too. But very safe. Most people work and have jobs to go to. Even if the job is making lattes or waiting tables, it gets them off the streets and gives them hope. Makes all the difference.

—in other words , that “minority” that accounts for the bulk of crime in the US (mostly against its own members) has been priced out of these places —where did they go?

Unfortunately, liberalism creates new and replacement thugs on an hourly basis.

In 1916 Chicago had the same population as now and recorded 105 killings.

That was the era when high school shooting team members could carry their guns with them on the trolleys to and from school.

Could something about the city have changed since then?

The Second Amendment was still in force in Chicago in 1916.

Getting rid of due process is what they need. But just try to lock up all the known thugs and listen to how much the Ds love due process. Ds will insist on a trial with witnesses (aka “next week’s targets”) on the stand.

I’d be against this, just pointing out the Ds reason for eliminating due process is not to reduce gun violence.

:: The cure for urban jungles is gentrification ::

Sam, you are ‘naive’ of our urban situation. #BLM mitigates AGAINST gentrification. Simply because ^gentrification^ involves “white-folk” reclaiming their living space.

#BLM owns the urban cityscape!

Admdit the tragic truth. BLACK Lives Matter, but only if the trigger fingers were WHITE.
If WHITE shoots BLACK in any city, the riots erupt. A slaughter on a typical weekend in black neighborhoods and the question is....who cares? (Beside the family.)

By and large I don't think they went anywhere. Otherwise we would have seen crime spike in other neighborhoods. Overall, NYC crime is way down from the 1970s.

Somebody has to work in all those shops, restaurants and other small businesses. During the 1970s, those neighborhoods were mostly burnt-out shells and the kids had nothing to do but join gangs and get in trouble. Now that I work in NYC, I like to see movies that were filmed in NYC back in the bad, old days like "Taxi Driver", "Warriors" and "Dog Day Afternoon". A much different NYC back then. Even the subway stations these days are getting Starbucks.

” . . . and the Chi-town voters keep on voting (D).”

For all practical purposes, there is no organized Republican party in Chicago (although there are still a few Republican voters). And that’s the vision Obama has for the country: co-opt as much of the GOP as possible, and make the rest irrelevant, so what’s left is essentially one party rule, no matter how incompetent that party.

That’s the direction the state of Illinois has been heading in, and Obama’s done surprisingly well in pushing the federal system in that direction as well. Unless we turn things around soon, look to Chicago politics (and its consequences) - that could be your future.
