German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that the EU could survive a Brexit and warned Britain the union would not tolerate “cherry-picking” in upcoming negotiations on their future relations.

“The EU is strong enough to withstand Britain’s withdrawal,” she told the German parliament ahead of a crisis summit of the 28 member states in Brussels. […]

“We will ensure there are no negotiations based on the principle of cherry-picking,” she said to applause. “There must be and will be a noticeable difference between whether a country wants to be a member of the European Union family or not.”

She added: “Anyone wishing to leave this family cannot expect to lose all the obligations but keep the privileges. This applies to Britain as it does to everyone else.” …

Belarus has a death penalty and it participates in the Eastern Partnership of the EU. They demand abolishment of death penalties in order to gain admittance.

Death penalty would probably screw them up with market relations, but it sure would discourage people like that bunch that showed up in Germany!

“The U.K. imports 60% of their food.”

I doubt that much of that food comes from Germany.

The EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights insists on abolition of the death penalty. They are still allowing countries to opt out, that is for now.

Are you going to love the left wing leader who replaces Merkel?

oh for goodness sakes. The EU isn’t the ONLY trade partner in the world. And if Canada can join the EU trading ring, then England can certainly join the soon-to-be-revisited NAFTA trading ring. (or maybe they’ll form their own with other ‘exit’ nations). It should not be thought of lightly that Brits have a very long memory - like an elephant. Treat them badly at your defense peril—FrenchcrybabiesI’mtalkingtoyou.

Absolutely true, but notice how they act (or, specifically, Germany acts) like they are towards the EU member states and members of the European Economic Area (EEA).

If England really wanted to stick its finger in the eye of the EU, they’d repeal their restrictive gun laws.

Factually true, but boy is she acting cranky. It will take a couple years for the Brits to actually withdraw from what I'm hearing. The actual terms can be negotiated, but it the EU won't budge then Britain is out -- without any niceties like free-trade agreements and such. So the East German bitch seems to be backtracking from here earlier statements about Britain having free-trade association with the EU. She's probably realized that she needs to take a hard-line or some of the other upper-tier EU members will start queuing up for the exits.

The EU must reform. Some of those many, many, referendums have the modest goal of simply changing Brussel’s more non-traditional and unpopular policies. This is absurd. There should be accountability.

< Merkel’s true colors emerging.

Yep. I bet her bank accounts are fatter than they've ever been. Every politician is for sale these days. No integrity left, just greed.

UK, just get out while you can!
(and now you can see more clearly just how dangerously you were being sucked into the Fourth Reich!)

Actually she’s downright reasonable compared to that Juncker guy. You know, the one from the tiny country who wants to institute a standing army and no doubt command it!

Its a 2 year process...2 years for a) Britain to ink a trade deal with the EU or b) Restaurants to find new sources.

This isn’t instantaneous. And there’s time...unless Merkel wants to play spoiler...which btw would hurt the EU as much as Britain.

“Germany loses as they export way more to the UK than they import.”

Give Merkel some time. When Mercedes and BMW’s start stacking up at German ports she become more receptive to cutting a trade deal with the U.K.
