Britain’s exit from European Union flags big changes across the globe
Herald Sun (Melbourne) ^ | 27th June 2016 | Rita Panahi

WATCHING the unhinged and unrestrained hysteria of the Left has been a delightful side benefit of the Brexit poll.

While the conservatives who campaigned for Great Britain to remain in the European Union have largely accepted the result with a measure of grace, elements of the Left have reacted with a level of hyperbole that is remarkable even by their shrill standards.

There are even demands for a new poll from the Brexit losers who seem to think democracy is only a valid exercise if their side wins. But a referendum is not a game of rock, paper, scissors that can be extended to a best of three if you don’t like the result.

The EU referendum showed that voters won’t be swayed by slurs, sneers and scaremongering. The tactic of characterising Leave voters as a pack of unthinking xenophobes backfired spectacularly.

Voters could smell the desperation and dishonesty of the Remainers. Indeed, the result showed that the shameful strategy of vilifying the majority of Brits who voted to leave the irreparably broken EU drove many undecided voters into the Leave camp, which was trailing by 20 points at the start of the campaign.

Locally, the reaction has been just as demented, as members of the media led by overpaid and under-worked ABC troglodytes prophesy global doom and calamity and condemn Brits as ignorant racists.

It’s quite extraordinary that the same people who are desperate for Australia to break away from Britain to become a republic are aghast that Brits want to break away from Belgium and reaffirm their sovereignty.

KEYWORDS:
I'm in the UK now. I feel a great need to get here as fast as possible following the referendum result. I'm going to buy a house now I have confidence that there'll always be an England and try to work out how to split my time between Australia and the UK as evenly as possible (I'm getting close to retirement age when 50/50 might work).

Will mean I won't be doing a live thread for the Australian Federal Election this weekend as I did in 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013 - but it's hard to be enthusiastic this time anyway, as the Australian choice is 'hold your nose and vote' - vote for a non-conservative centrist who is leading the conservative coalition because so many people in Parliament didn't have the guts to fight for what they believe in - or hope for a Labor win, so the country will see them implode and put them back into opposition for the next decade or so in 2019.

I wonder why it’s such a big deal. A big part of anti-exiter propaganda was that the UK is totally irrelevant and unimportant and would just be completely unnoticeable if not for the mighty EU.

I'm confused (not really). The EU elite and their minions are saying the vote isn't binding. Would it not have been binding if they won?

We have our parallel. The disgusting backstabbing GOP elite are trying to say that the votes of us little folk shouldn't be binding.

History has not been kind to elitists who ignore the will of us little folk.

Let's disengage from the UN, while it is still in vogue.

Good luck to you!

While I have no affinity for royals (my family bugged out in the 17th) I wish you and your countrymen well. You can weather this storm.

I’d actually like to come back and visit sometime before I die, I hope there’s still an “English” England to visit. My last visit was in ‘73. Too young to really appreciate it.

That is certainly one of the reasons I want to do it now. The exchange rate is in my favour.

I've already asked one of my friends who said he would be leaving England if they voted for exit, if his house is available for purchase seeing he's leaving. He was not amused.

It’s a perfect time to send the EU to the EU. Let the UN fend for itself...

What amazes me is how shrill and hysterical some of the young snowflakes that I know from Northern Virginia are about this referendum. It’s amazing—and it’s not just them. Even older Democrats I know are lock-step in the hysteria. I think David French’s new piece at NRO explains it well though.
