The Supreme Court leaves undocumented immigrants in the shadows
Washington Post ^ | 6/23/2016 | Editorial Board

ON ONE level, it’s unsurprising that the Supreme Court deadlocked 4 to 4, after an appeals court split 2 to 1, in considering President Obama’s sweeping executive action to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation. As a legal matter, this was not an easy call.

What makes the outcome so depressing for the country, and such a standard-bearer for failed governance, is that as a policy matter, it shouldn’t be hard at all. Immigrants have been and continue to be, on balance, an overwhelmingly positive force for the nation’s social and economic health. It would be in their interest and the nation’s to regularize the status of workers and families who, as a practical matter, are not going away. There was a time when politicians of both parties understood this and actually came close to legislating a solution. But loss of nerve and an impulse to torpedo compromise in search of maximal political advantage put a solution out of reach, and here we are: Millions of people remain condemned to live in the shadows, and the U.S. economy cannot take advantage of the talents and energies of all the nation’s inhabitants.

surge in immigration from Mexico around the turn of the century was the precipitating event. As Mexico’s economy improved, the surge slowed and even reversed, but 11 million or so undocumented immigrants (by no means all Mexican, of course) remain. A Senate compromise, supported for a time by Republicans such as John McCain (Ariz.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.), as well as by most Democrats, would have allowed these undocumented people to stay if they learned English, paid taxes and followed the law. Stricter border security and penalties against employers of illegal immigrants would have discouraged future surges. A win all around.

House Republicans, though, refused to consider the compromise.

Boo-Freakin´-Hoo! Funny, they don´t appear to be in "the shadows" when they´re outside Trump rallies waving Mexican flags. They do not fear deportation, especially under this corrupt administration.

When trying to justify the benefit of illegal aliens’ presence here WaPo lumps them into the overall ‘immigrant’ category.

They and other bleeding heart, spend-your-money liberals can’t justify the benefit of illegals one damn bit.

“The Supreme Court leaves undocumented immigrants in the shadows”

Funny, I always assumed it was because they illegally came into the nation without permission, and refuse to go home and do it the right way.

They are not undocumented immigrants. They are criminal invaders.

How is immigration good for social health? Jihad, unemployment and massive welfare expenses are not positive social influences, unless you are a globalist and want América enslaved.

Honestly, the delusion of the media is just too weird to be sincere. There were interviews on the evening news last night with affected invaders. They were middle aged, shown with their teenage children, and you know what? They could hardly communicate their thoughts in English, after all those years of being here.

As a resident of a border state, who sees illegals tramping past my house on a regular basis, the protests interest me.
I would think if they put half the effort into applying for legal status as they do protesting, they would be given green cards. Especially with the current regime.

But wait, then they would no be able to claim their Oppressed Status.

In the shadows?? America is being invaded by foreign hoards.

They’re in our schools, hospitals, McDonald’s, hospitality, universities, construction, transportation, prisons, and in some cases our voting booths.

I hate it when I hear "The Supreme Court does ". They don't "do things" - that's the job of Congress and the executive. They rule on if it's constitutional for the executive to do something that Congress said he should or can do. The worst is "The Supreme Court declared Bush the president over Gore". No wonder people don't have a clue how government should work when the media misstates things all the time and we don't teach it in schools.

You have legal immigration and you have illegal immigration. All the other “buzz” words are B.S.

The Washington Post is getting no love in the comments section. There seems to be one poster trying to support the Posts viewpoint, everybody else is hammering it like a bent nail.

They came here illegally and swear no allegiance to our country. It’s sickening the excuses for this illegal activity. The immigrants through Ellis Island had to be determined if they would be allowed entry and this forced entry and sense of entitlement from these invaders is why our country is in downfall. They cannot justify this so shout racism! There is no right to break our laws when those who come here legally did it for what? Mexico is also hypocritical on this issue as they have very strict immigration laws.
