Pope on death penalty: 'Thou shalt not kill' is absolute

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis is amplifying his opposition to capital punishment, saying it's an offense to life, contradicts God's plan and serves no purpose for punishment. In a video message to an anti-death penalty congress in Norway, Francis declared: "The commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' has absolute value and applies both to the innocent and to the guilty."

Francis has gone beyond his predecessors and traditional Catholic teaching in saying there is simply no justification for the death penalty today. He said Tuesday that rather than rendering justice, it fosters vengeance. Church teaching allows for recourse to capital punishment when it is the only way to defend lives "effectively" against an aggressor.

Francis said: "It must not be forgotten that the inviolable and God-given right to life also belongs to the criminal."

Why is it that leftists are the happiest whenever this Pope opens his mouth?

Because they love false prophets.

Don’t know why but I just had a vision of a new toy.
“Tickle me Francis”
Poke at him and he says something stupid.

I can understand the position of being against the death penalty on moral grounds.

But the commandment is “Though shall not murder,” to be more accurate.

Nothing is “absolute” with dear Uncle Francis. Why would this example be different, I’m sure I don’t know? It’s a free for all out there, don’t we know? :)

This isn’t one of those things he confused about, is it? Or, as long as the method of killing is beheading, I guess it’s OK? Coz this guy comes out with some very relativist stuff.

Well, every murderer who is put into prison for life instead of executed costs the taxpayers millions and millions of dollars. In fact, prisons have gotten so expensive, they have let a lot of prisoners out.

Of course, Pope the Dope doesn’t have to pay for any of this. So he just keeps sticking his nose into it.

He sure contradicts God’s word, Christ’s death and right reason. Thank God for the Reformation teachers and their Scriptural teachings

So far it is just the Pope's opinion.

If the Pope makes it an ex-cathedra dogma, I believe the Catholic Church will implode in this country.

The Pope is considered infallible in matters of Faith and Morals and if a Catholic disagrees on this ex-cathedra doctrine on the death penalty, they are heretics and should be excommunicated.

He hasn't made it official yet, so it is just opinion. -Tom

Sooooo ... The Lord was wrong to provide for the death penalty? Really?

Or does the Scripture speak about the civil authorities having the power of the comfy chair rather than the sword?

Absolute?
Then why were all the death penalties in Leviticus and Deuteronomy?

There is no such commandment as “thou shalt not kill”

There IS a commandment, “thou shalt not murder”

the difference is, there are justified killings..
such as...
1. there are certain situations which justify capital punishment (see Bible, for starters)....
2. and killing in self or community or national defense, or defense of others, is justified (see Bible, for starters...)
etc.

The speaker should get a Bible and read more of it ... he has a lot of learning to do but that’s not uncommon and God’s word is available to all....

No, the Bible says thou shall not commit murder.

Completely different.

The Bible also recognizes man's ability to create and enforce law over other man as Jesus recognized Pontius Pilate's authority to carry out the law over Him, as was required to fulfill the Scriptures.
