Some time back I visited Cumberland Island National Sea Shore back country. There are raised causeways between swamps that once were rice patties. In those swamps are alligators.

We learned by accident that if you heaved a good chunk of wood, it would be attacked the instant it hit the water. We got some fantastic pictures of gators mouths wide open and three or feet out of the water as they lunged upward. You could see the white inside of their mouths and teeth

The kid was nothing more than a chunk of wood

Much later on what turned out to be a bucket list back packing expedition, we encountered a 12 foot gator (measured from the photos) that was sitting comfortably astride the causeway blocking the trail. By facing us and hissing it made known it was his trail. We back tracked and added 3 miles to our total for the day.
