NRA officials split with Trump on wisdom of armed club-goers

Top National Rifle Association officials split Sunday with Donald Trump's position that armed club-goers are a good idea.

"I don't think you should have firearms where people are drinking," said Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's chief executive officer said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "But I will tell you this. Everybody, every American starts to have -- needs to start having a security plan. We need to be able to protect ourselves, because they're coming. And they're going for vulnerable spots, and this country needs to realize it."

NRA lobbyist Chris Cox told ABC's "This Week": "No one thinks that people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms. That defies commonsense. It also defies the law. It's not what we're talking about here."

I am with Trump on this one. What is the matter with the NRA?

If people had guns, the terrorist would have been dead after his first shot and many innocent lives would have been saved.

I would go even further and say if the venue allowed Concealed Carry folks and advertised that fact, the killer would have never gone to that venue in the first place.

Not illegal in many states. That said, drinking and guns, like driving do not mix. Maybe designated shooter?

Designated Drivers and sober bartenders should be allowed to carry, at a minimum.

I’ve seen that in NYC when I was younger. But it was the exception, not the rule.

The cops getting out of control, that was the rule :)

Look at it this way, the Jihadist was during the time he was massacring innocent people, he was facebooking, tweeting, texting, talking on the phone, surfing the web, and talking to the cops..if just ONE club goer had a gun, just ONE, he would have been able to take this scum bag out, but NO, instead these people were unarmed and sitting ducks

Did the Earps really not allow guns in the town limits?

If you have the designated driver be the designated carrier, that would increase chances against future Islamo**cks, and alleviate concern. Also have the armed guard be plainclothes.

I don’t think Trump’s statement was meant as a definitive policy statement, that a bunch of drunken partiers should be carrying guns. I think bartenders, bouncers, and even the sober public should be allowed to carry. Having hundreds of unarmed people in a place that had only one way to get out, is asking for trouble, particularly in this age of insanity.

While Trump’s heart is in the right place, he needs to be a bit more strategic about HOW he presents a position on various issues like this one. Giving patriotic allies like the NRA reason to say what they did, is not a positive, especially with the low-information electorate.

Simple. Just arm the designated drivers. That would be “innovative”.

Exactly. Armed security with a rifle on site. Hell, even a 10/22 or frangible ammo. I can pop him in the eye at a 100 yds with a .22 LR and the show's over.

I remember video of the Mumbai attack that showed Indian law enforcement or military armed with bolt action Enfields, probably .308 cowering behind pillars with the terrorists within 50 yds.

Carrying concealed in a bar is legal in South Carolina as long as the licensed carrier is not drinking. I hope the NRA is not against this.

Well, if you allow guns in places where people are drinking and taking drugs, you’ll have a lot of people killed by drunks. And probably a lot of innocent people outside on the street passing by. Drunk people should not have guns.

I see no problem, however, with having armed security in a bar.

Me? I’m 58, and haven’t set foot in a bar in a long, long time. I just do not like drunk people.

Not everyone who goes into a nightclub and has a few drinks is incapable of exercising good judgment.

There are also a substantial number that drink very little choosing instead to participate in dancing and socializing.

And then there are the security guards that abstain totally from drinking any alcohol.

The people in the NRA that ‘CNN’ reports either were misquoted or they were set up for a gotcha.
